i am a kind of guy who blends in. i have been traveling all over asia for 27 years through many airports, towns and cities. so, if you are slightly unfamiliar or nervous, take the taxi, or if you look really, really white and dressed really nicely and look like a victim, take a taxi. so, i recommend walking with some caution. bayleaf for 90 bucks a night, was a really nice hotel affordable hotel. it had solid and comfortable beds. very clean per western standards. nice breakfast, and a triple a skydeck. great place if you just want to spend most of your time in the room. the room smelled good. i do carry a spray can of axe, which i spray in rooms to couch dingy smells. i did not had to do this at this hotel. it is a brand new hotel. i don't remember seeing a pool. it probably has one. i will probably stay there again, if my intention is to hit up mbc and cowboy grill on my next trip which is towards the ermita side.

all in all, a very satisfying short trip. i did call my second 'appointment' and cancelled. the conversation with the two old gents got very interesting and i enjoyed their company.

Considering the quality of some of the responses that I had received, I was beginning to think that this forum had been hijacked by larry lizards who measure the quality of their input by the number of posts that they make. My experience has been that well known venues such as Edsa, MBC, and Angeles only scratch the surface of the mongering mundo in the PI. It is like shit on a horse ranch: it's everywhere. As an example, I was walking through Tondo, a neighborhood in northern Manila, when the coffee kicked in and I was overwhelmed by the need to take a shit. It was awful; there was no place to go. I was about to pull down my pants in the gutter of a busy street and let it rip when I happened to see an open air store that had several girls lolling about. I used their toilet and learned that this was a bordello. A couple of girls were erection benders. I had to continue with my business and never made it back. About the dentists. I am pretty much locked into going to Global City. The quality of dentists in the PI is spotty. Some are good and some are bad. The best in this part of the world are probably at Bumrungrad in Thailand and though they are less expensive than some places, they ain't cheap.

Thanks for the excellent report. I've seen Bayleaf from a distance numerous times and thought it would be interesting to stay there if I had a regular gal. I'm not sure I would walk from there to Ermita on a hot day, but I guess that's one way to burn off some of the beer calories.

Bayleaf turned out to be a pretty nice hotel. Though a little far, it was a very nice hotel. Excellent bed, and nice premium quality sheeting and pillows. It was huge change compared to St. Giles which I stayed at couple of weeks earlier. I recommend this hotel, and it is very quiet, and girl friendly. They did not card my girl, so be extra careful with the girls you bring in.

Bayleaf is in Intramuros, inside the walls of the old city, adjacent to the Intramuros golf course. The view was astounding. The 'sky deck' had a view of the ocean as well as most of the city. It is a very popular hang-out for locals on Friday and Saturday evenings because of the buffet restaurant. There were a lot of family type guests at this hotel as a lot of the tourist attractions were walking distance.

One problem was, it takes a few minutes to locate a taxi. Not many taxis inside the old city walls. I wanted to head to Robinsons at Ermita. To go to my usual Starbucks, get a book and then sit at my usual TGI's for couple of beers and read my book. So, decided to walk. Again the 'locals' thought 30 minute walk was too far. It took me exactly 30 minutes, through Rizal Park and down Marcelo Del Pilar Avenue.

M. Del Pilar is about three blocks toward Manila Bay further than you needed to go. Go out the South side of the Bayleaf onto Victoria. Take Victoria straight toward the Bay until you get to General Luna. You'll know you're at Luna if you see the Philippine Red Cross on the far right corner. Turn left on General Luna and walk on the left side of the street. A short distance after you break under the old city wall you'll come to a triangle of the roads. Take the left side of the triangle, then proceed across Padre Burgos (named after the same martyr, but different street than BG district in Makati) in the same general direction you were going on General Luna. You are now on Maria Orosa. On your left within the first stretch is the Luneta Orchidarium, one of the best little parks in Metro Manila. If you're with a "cultured" woman, she'll be impressed by the orchids and the butterfly garden. There is an entrance fee. Average poor Filipinas may have no interest. Next you're walking across the open area of Rizal Park for about two blocks. Continue on Maria Orosa for about another three blocks once you enter into the city streets again. You'll run smack dab into the Padre Faura entrance of Robinson's.

Only reason to go all the way to del Pilar is if you're looking for MBC, Amazonia, Hussey's, Southern Cross, or some of the other bars there. If you walked form MBC to the Bayleaf in 20 minutes, you probably could have walked Bayleaf to Robinson's in 15 minutes by the route I just described.

I have been advising, for those planning travel soon, that Manila is currently experiencing extremely hot days and it is likely to continue.
