Change your dollars into pesos in the DR at reputable places such as Western Union or RUSA. You will get a much better rate than at home.
If you use dollars you will suffer from "rounding up". Over your whole trip this could add up to quite a lot. The locals can round up quite a lot because:
(1) exchange rates fluctuate and they want to make sure they don't lose out.
(2) most of them are innumerate and cannot calculate the right change. And even if they could they might not have it. Change is hard to get in the DR.
A typical scenario: a puta would be happy to get 1500 pesos from you (about US$32. 80) but if you paid in dollars would insist on US$50.
