We ate tonight at Claude's (Cafe de Ville) and had the usual excellent meal: oysters, escargots, magret de canard (duck breast), profiteroles, a nice bottle of chilled Fleurie, and-for my first time ever in the Philippines-a snifter of Armagnac. Granted, the bill was about Php6500, but it was worth every centavo. Afterward, because I hadn't seen Henny in a while, we walked the 20 meters or so over to his place and I was blown away.

There must have been 250-300 people-all within the 18-23 or 24 age range-packing the tables from Someplace Else to the end of the terrace now operated jointly by Henny and the two guys who own Dos Amigos Restaurant across from Henny's place. The crowd was noisy, enthusiastic, and getting ever bigger with each passing minute. There were tables of girls, tables of young guys, tables of young men and women, all sitting around drinking beers and smoking the water pipes. They were loud, boisterous, and having a hell of a good time. I have no idea how many of the extremely well dressed, attractive young women were with the young Filipinos and how many were looking to score, but given the law of averages in this country, and given the sheer volume of people, the likelihood is that there were dozens of available females.

We parked in the Metro Bank lot across the street from Habana Compound, where Henny's and Someplace else are located. It was empty when we arrived at 8 and full when we left about 11:30. Chico's, which is the music bar in front of the compound was also rocking when we left though there were some tables available outside.

As we drove up Rizal St., we passed the infamous Bar 183, which was sparsely populated, which suggests to me that Henny's "Patio, " coupled with Someplace Else, has really eaten into the bar's business. The terrace that abuts Henny's, and extends over to Dos Amigos and Someplace Else might as well belong to the same restaurant, given that the crowd moves back and fourth seamlessly. When I was talking-which was difficult given the noise level-to Henny outside, he told me that the crowds would become much thicker during the next couple of hours, and he said that the same phenomenon occurs on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights. For all you newbies in Davao, I strongly suggest that you check this spot out at least once while you're here, and that you make sure to go on one of the three "big" nights.

Walking across to the parking lot, and again while driving slowly up Rizal to get home, we noticed several smaller groups of well dress, highly attractive young women sort of hanging around. They were all, my lady assured me, "on the game, " and were probably college/university students looking to score some tuition help.

The bottom line? If you couldn't get laid on Rizal St. Tonight, you might as well pack it up and leave, cause the opportunities were so bountiful as to have been almost endless.

As readers of this forum might remember, we've got a Great Dane and, as could be expected with a 60-65 kg. Dog, he eats a hell of a lot of food. Recently we've been purchasing the 22 kgs. Sacks at a place called Canine Central. I write this, not with the expectation that most of the guys coming here are in the market for dog food, but because the place is actually a coffee shop/small restaurant owned by a veterinarian. I like it because I can sip a latte, munch on a cookie, and bring the dog, who also likes the cookies very much.

Today while we were there, my lady noticed a small bandstand and curious about this apparent incongruity, we asked the young man who was busy making her fresh strawberry shake, to explain it to us. He said that there's a small live band that plays every night except Sunday. He also said that on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays the place is full of "young women and men. " Now full in this case means twenty-five to thirty people. Tireless in my pursuit of helpful information to members of the board, I pressed on and ask if he thought the place was a good spot for meeting women. His eyes lit up, and he said enthusiastically "Oh yes. Many women come here. "

As bizarre as this unlikely combination of pet store/coffee shop/restaurant may sound, the whole thing is actually pretty attractive, with about three tables on a covered terrace outside. All in all, it would not be a bad place to hang around though it well off the path of the more well known girl-chasing haunts.

Canine Central is located on Lanang Road., immediately before the right turn off that would take you on the overpass toward Ladislawa Village. It's about a three minute drive from Swiss Deli and, coming from the other direction, maybe 10-15 minutes from Rizal St. By taxi.

While this whole report may sound a bit off the wall, I think this place could be worth checking out on one of the three nights mentioned. My dog really likes it.

I also noted that Someplace Else has opened the new bar next to Hennys place. It's a bit more up market than the other place and I believe attracting a better class of young talent. They even have Montecristo's on sale, and probably the best top shelf selection anywhere in Davao. Worth checking it out as it's not quite as noisy as the rest of the compound.

I knew that the folks who own Someplace Else had taken it over, but I never even noticed it the last time I was at Henny's, and I've never been inside. I'm not terribly fond of the owners of Someplace Else, so I probably wouldn't spend my money there, but I'm sure that--for those looking to hook up--it's worth checking out.

I was planning a field report on the changes at this place, but as usual GE gets the scoop. And who cares since he writes better than I do.

I got to the patio early (with a date) and it was empty. Almost immediately a group of five women sat down a few tables over. It seem the outdoor patio has a more casual menu, but the food may be coming from the surrounding upscale restaurants. I had some great quesidillas (spelling?).

Chicos has changed their interior. My feeling is the change was just to cram in a few more seats. There is a music charge here, so if you just want a quick beer you should be warned that it will be an expensive beer. They have live music and it may be jazz and it may be pop. Nice place for a date.

I do not know the guys who own Someplace Else. Met one of them once a few years ago on my daughter's birthday. Thought he was okay. GE is not fond of them and he likes almost everyone.

What Henny is doing is called "evolve or perish". After 10PM you have to move it outside or be devoid of business. The ban on smoking here and the preponderance of young filipinos and ex-pats who like to smoke means that Clubs must have outdoor patios with music in order to survive. Both henny's and Dos Amigos have few, if any, customers inside from 9PM to closing (03:00Am or so). As a non-smoker I can attest to this as it is usually myself, my woman and my infant son as the only patrons inside any of these places later in the evening.

I hope to make it to Davao. Stuck in Cagayan de oro now due to inclement weather. Making the most of it eating, drinking and fucking.

No to imply that GE is in any way part taking, buy there IS a dispute between the owner groups and I had my share of "information" from both sides. You can see all the elements of envy and regrets for not doing this or that, in this little neighbourhood battle.

I think it would be simplest for these two groups of adults to become friends again. They are all seemingly doing great business wise. I personally feel it is slightly uncomfortable to one day listen to one side of the story, and next day sit at "the other side". The variation in such a small area is one of the strengths. To have a DBK-stew one day and sample the immense drink list at SPE the next. I have one friend who feel very uncomfortable to visit DBK at all because he normally sit at SPE . So when I meet him we normally pick another place. Might be silly and over sensitive of him, but at the end of the day I can see no winner in this.

As I said, I have found a new Place that I truly like in Cagayan De Oro. I have met two beautiul ladies whose schedules of classes and home are perfect.
