World Cup, Olympics, Etc.
Not even the wealthier countries should host these events on the backs of citizens. Only politicians, businesses, television and these sports' committee members (through bribes & perks) profit from the events. The citizens get screwed via taxes, bonds, fees, etc. Do you know that each year, several American cities spend millions of tax dollars just to BID on hosting these events?
For third-world countries, it's even worse. Just look at what happened to Greece and South Africa. Then consider what these events do to our mongering life! Drive up prices, police crackdowns.
Thank God the Philippines and Thailand have no plans to host.
San Paulo. World Expo 2020

The cost to host the World Expo in San Paulo was estimated at $3 BILLION dollars ($9 BILLION if you include the cost of transportation infrastructure). If I was a Brazilian, I'd be rioting too if my taxes were being spent on such foolishness at the expense of education, health care, sanitation, etc.
