I have been there enough over the years to have "friends" that take care of me when I visit China now. But before I got to this point I got scammed a few times myself. Met a European guy in a bar in Beijing one night that talked me into going to this other bar with lots of beautiful women. Turned out to be a KTV and I got stuck with a $1500 US bar tab. But the girls were very nice and I met a Chinese girl who is still a good friend of mine and takes care of me when I am in Beijing. So the evening was not a total loss. As far as China being expensive you are right about that. There are a lot of rich Chinese and westerners in Shanghai and Beijing that keep the prices high.

I am pretty much to looking for a honest place to go and have a good time and a few drinks. I am starting to think it's just not worth visiting places where the government does not want this kind of activity.

Shanghai Nightlife Guide used to be a decent resource but it's no longer kept up to date. I've tried and enjoyed both saunas you mention but not in the past 6 months.

How were you ripped off at these saunas? I lost count of the number of saunas I've been to over the years, never have I been ripped off once. Prices are made absolutely clear and you pay after the service. Or were you ripped off by one of the touts along Nanjin Road? Read through this board and you'll come across pages of posts that scream to avoid these touts at all cost.

Shanghai caters to all budget and taste, from the RMB500+ lower end saunas (lower if you go for the barber shops) to RMB3000+ models. You just have to know where to look for them. Read up and PM some of the regulars if you need help.

Both Dongguan and Red House are legit. They are in the upper end of spectrum so be prepared to pay a little more.
