Another reason to love pilippines
2 grilled pork sticks, grilled chicken (thigh and leg) rice and a beer. $2. USD. I love it!
For whatever reason, when I travel, I find myself cycling thru periods of cheap food, followed by better food. So for a few days I hit the BBQ stands. Like Blu. 3 grilled pork or chicken sticks, rice, and a drink (soda / juice). Given the (free) hotel buffet breakfast, I do this about 3 or 4 times a day, for about $10 for a day's food. Several days of this, like this is the way humanity should eat all the time, and suddenly I have a desire for sit-down restaurants and / or fast food for the next several days. Then back to BBQ stands. No idea why my system is like this; it has nothing to do with money.
In Butuan recently I had two playmates (nay, skanks, I've had them several times) bus in from a further-in-the-twigs province. Normally we jeep into town from the hotel to find eats. One of the the counter staff suggested we walk up the highway a few blocks to a BBQ place across from the hospital, so we did. Wow, what a large selection of already-prepped foods + fresh bbq. A full meal for each of us (I had bbq, they had prepped foods, one of which was shrimps) , plus 3 rice, plus they ordered a separate large pot of vegetables (almost looked like a thick soup or stew; sarap!) for us to split (which we could not kill) , & we had one drink each. Then it started to rain harder than previously and we decided to sit and wait it out so we all got another drink. Total cost was under p300 (no tip, cafeteria style). I love pinas!
