Last time I was near the Buddha place it was closed. The nearest place was around the corner on Shaanxi Bei Lu. More and more, places are being closed or driven out of sight.

Either way from what I heard both Changning and Xuhui are under big pressure lately (but the rest of SH also gets raided even in remote places like Yangpu district which got a sauna raided / closed a few weeks back).

There was a local gov official change in Xuhui which seems to have accelerated the raids.

It seems 2 saunas were simultaneously raided that night and they seized several million RMB in cash with 100+ customers getting arrested.

The police seemed to have studdied the place quite well (maze, several fake wall / doors with key cards, .).

For some time there has been rumors that what happened to Minhang would happend in other districts little by little. It may be the start of it.

If you don't read chinese you can google translate to english to get the essence of it. Its prolly one of the most detailed public report given by a reporter and the police.

With that kind of info being public since the 8th or 9th of August, you may understand the raids for the past few days.

The context is similar to Donguan raids which started with similar reporting (on TV back then). Don't forget either that the people who got punished in Donguan raids were friends of Zhou Yang Kang (n2 of Jiang Zeming, part of the Shanghai Clique)... and enemy of the current Chinese president. Don't forget finally that members of the polit bureau are to be nominated in the next few months and that cutting the money from opponents in the party is key for a successful bureau which will allow the president to renew is mandate for many years without oppositions. Well it made sense Shanghai itself would get hit at some point, especially since the way the industry has developped here since the DG closure.

In short. Stay home and be safe. Local politics are too hot lately to risk yourself being colateral damage.

Seeing these pics brings back many (bad) memories.

A few observations from my own bad weather experience:

- they brought heavy guns out this time (SWAT team);.

- their practice is to humiliate and dehumanize you: letting you sit in unnatural and uncomfortable positions, shouting at you, slapping / hitting and kicking (yes! You will be hooded like the Gitmo terrorists in order to disorient you and very heavy handcuffs are used (not seen in the photos).

- this all leads you to loose complete sense of control over your situation;.

- they will use social shaming (calling family and work) in order to get info from you.

- A lot of these LE weathermen are very young and with little life experience but they now control your fate and often abuse that (have witnessed this first hand).

So, yes gents be very conscious of the situation here, this is not going to a sauna club in Germany!

We always say 'play safe' but this is almost impossible since the only safe option is a) no play or b) freelanchers. All commercial venues, from high level sauna to low level BBS, are potential targets. But at least in a SPA you can claim to have only a regular massage.

With the upcoming leadership change later this year we are looking at a few months of elevated storm warnings and dry spell (this is no contradiction unfortunately).

The past couple of days was a huge operation. All places, big or small, pay for a stormwatch. Many of the places who usually gets a warning beforehand didn't even get a whiff of what was to come. Hence, that one place which was ransacked for 500 M yuan. Even reporters were in the know before the places were.

It seems Judy's has been affected as well. Passed by just now and there's a police tape and lock on the door. Not sure of Manhattan though.

There are still some MP' s still open but I'd strongly advise against it. It seems they are hitting saunas first and then onto MP's, seeing that a few of them got struck yesterday and saunas the days before. Go out into the lightning storm at your own risk.

HJ SPA are not immune either they are just harder to be caught during the act, but since very few HJ joints are HJ only these days, it still can happend. And that's why many will chose to close until wether is less harsh.

Considering the current campaign, I wouldn't be surprised if they were to hit some agencies whom advertise on the internet too (they busted some chinese agencies a few months back, at some point they can aim foreigner oriented ones too). Since they have chinese phone numbers or wechat, how hard can it be for the authorities to listen to these booking requests and bust meetings at hotel rooms?

Safest option would be calling SPA/Sauna girls directly on their phone/wechat because they as individual are less likely to be a target...

Walked through a side street of Damuqiao Lu (not sure if this is part of Xuhui district, but at least close by) and all four shops were closed and boarded off by large pieces of plywood, basically covering the whole store windows and even walls. No trace of there being P4P places. If fact it looked like they were preparing for an incoming typhoon....aka storm.

Gents, we are facing tough and dangerous times and no one knows for how long. I remember a few years back due to some large international forum being held in Shanghai a similar situation but that only started close to the event itself and ended soon thereafter. Now we are facing the upcoming all important senior leadership change (expected to take place later this year since in good local tradition no exact dates are issued in advance, we will probably only know it close to it happening). Anyway if this is the case (we are still in August) we can expect 2-3 months of elevated risk and reduced options. Added to this overall situation there are the district leadership changes taking place and their usual 'setting the rules of the game' exercises.

The other side is that the WG are really experiencing large revenue losses as an insider informed me. More than ever trusted regulars are vital now!
