Is this a club or an open are market? What is the best time/day to go. Will be in Rio next weekend and I will for sure check this place out.
The above is the commonly used name for the open air market at Sao Cristovao. It is enclosed in whar it looks like the shell of a stadium ( you may have seen it on the way into the city from Galeo airport on your right hand side just before the centro on the linha vermelha overpass)
I was there last friday night. The place was rocking. Great forro shows, dancing everywhere and lots of normal people around. Mind you, it is the meeting point for lots of nordestino migrants. Most of those from Northeast Brasil have not been blessed by good looks. What they miss in beauty they gain in cheerfulness (and safadeza) There is a type of dance which you will see in the small bars called "mela cueca" (literally "wet your underwear"). You will see, and hopefully experience, why.
Lots of GDPs go there to eat and get drunk with their girlfriends at after terma closing time. It is pretty much open all night at the weekends.
As said, the food is fantastic, cheap, and the portions are huge (as are the cholesterol levels) Try "carne do sol" and "baiao a dois"
The most popular restaurant, judging by the number of punters, was Saverina. you will find it towards the end of the middle "promenade".
You can pull a local there with ease if you speak a little portuguese and like to dance (or at least have a low embarrassment threshold) Nobody cares there...
I would shell out 25 reais or so to go there by taxi. There is a rank outside to return. The surrounding area in the dark is pretty sinister. But then I am very cautious and many of you out there walk around VM with ease...
