I disagree. Wanchai is a great place to have a drink. listen to some good music, chill out, flirt and if you like what's on offer, by all means buy. We all know what the base prices are. Its up to us what amounts we want to spend. Some people, hungrier than most, will pay some ridiculous prices that we see. Wanchai for me is like the website alibaba. Wanchai is a place for buyers and sellers to congregate, and if the price is right, the deal is done. The buyer decides what he wants to pay.
Looking at the sale in Wanchai - boy spots girl, they chat, they dance, they flirt, they drink, they dance some more, they whisper in each other's ear and off they go hand in hand about an hour or so later, off to the short time hotel. $500 is my short time price. Add in 2 ladies drinks plus the motel charkes + 2 heinekens (happy hour prices)works out to 500+160+145+52 or $857.
The sale in Mongkok - let's take Dundas for example. Walk in, go to a room, get shown a line up. Pick and pay. Its $390 for 45 minutes, so if you want 1.5 hours, you pay $780. $100 for the room makes it a grand total of $880. You get to the room, strip, take a shower, and onto business. Finish, take a shower, and you're out. I'm calculating double time here to match up with the time you will get with a honey in Wanchai.
You can see there's not much difference in overall price here. Therefore the "tourist price for sex" all depends on the tourist himself.
However, like most places in the world, one needs to be aware and be careful with their surroundings. I frequently see people leaving their drinks on a bar or on a table and go off to dance with a girl. What a great opportunity to slip something in? I have a steadfast rule. If I have to leave my drink unattended, I make sure I finish most of it and when I return back, I will not touch the old drink. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
No locals in Wanchai? I beg to differ. I've been going to Laguna for the past 8 plus years. I see the same faces, some of whom go there daily. Yes they're westerners, but they live here. You will also see about a dozen or so local Chinese there. You will see local Chinese in Makati with their arms around some of their tasty Filipinas. Dreams has a number of local chinese people. Neptunes, as one poster mentioned has a few. Another thing that could be stopping more chinese from coming into the bars is the entry charges some places charge.
I go to various places. 141's, Dundas, Wanchai which is on my way home. I like China girls and tend to visit Dundas street once in a while. I went there last night. Paid for time and a half since I wanted to relax a bit, and was up in the room getting a massage when the cops raided. Lots of loud banging, lots of swear words, lights on and off. Had to try to put on my clothes in the deep dark. Had to open the door to the police while semi clothed. They took my hong kong identity details, my address, my handphone number, and I was stuck there for about 90 minutes. Had to ask permission to stand up, and permission to use the toilet which was four feet away. I know my rights so I had no real worries, but its not an experience I want to repeat.
Its not an experience I would want for a tourist coming to Hong Kong to experience either. On a positive side, it took my hard on away real fast.
I then headed to Wanchai. Stopped in to Makati to have a beer where I was accosted by a girl whom I previously had all night long for $1,000. Not being in a chatty mood, I headed to Laguna. Saw my 2 chinese friends, bought them beers, drank up and left.
Have fun, stay safe and watch your drinks!
For the newbies reading the reports below regarding the problems and confusion in the Wan Chai bar area and Fenwick types bars, are you starting to get the feeling Wan Chai is too much trouble to deal with? Add to this the tourist price for sex, which is way, way, way overpriced and you may conclude as I did many years ago, Wan Chai bar/sex outlets are a big waste of time.
Let's be clear about one fact, the Wan Chai bar scene is for sex tourist. Thus, the higher prices and rip-offs. Plus, many women see the men in these bars as targets. Why take a trip half way around the world to have trouble in a girlie bar....it is not worth it.
Also, another fact is the locals do NOT hang-out in the Wan Chai bars and there is a good reason for this. Which is, the local Chinese guys have known for years the Wn Chai bar area for girls is a rip-off. It always has been, and it always will be.
Ok, I am sure some guys will disagree with what I have written and that is fine. They love the bars there and are happy to pay HK$1,000 or more for ST. I mainly provide this information for the newbies who are trying to make an informed decision about where to spend their time.
