Hang in there. COVID is not done with us yet
It's easy to blame Thailand's lack of testing (which is true) for low numbers of positive cases, but the fact is if there were lot more number of covid patients roaming around un-tested, then their would have been way too many dead bodies to hide. It's Thailand not China, you just can't hide the huge number of dead people from the world.
Fact: Of course the numbers are wrong. I don't expect any government in the whole world to be able to put out the exact numbers of infected, unless 100% of the population is tested. And then there is a possibility of them not telling the truth for whatever reason because, well governments lie all the time, just like you, me, and everybody. This is not an opinion, but a fact.
Opinion: I would say the health of most Asian countries is overall better than most Western countries when it comes to recovery from a case of COVID-19. Meaning, I think there is a good number on Thais who are positive and were told to stay at home and recover on your own inside the home. If you are mildly sick, stay at home. They do not have enough beds to to handle an outbreak in a hospital. Also I think those who have died in their homes maybe been attributed to something else, pneumonia or old age or whatever. They don't have the money to do autopsies on everybody.
So what I'm saying is that most Thais who caught it, are very mild to no symptoms just because they are healthier than in the USA. These are not counted. The ones (Thais) that died at home also "some" not counted. If they were foreign and died at home, which happened, they are counted. So that's why the Thais believe they are a healthy destination. Thailand is not Denmark, Finland, New Zealand when it comes to corruption and government transparency. And those in the rural areas and villages are not the brightest ones to offer dissent. This is still a kingdom, just like the movies.
Testing. The actual situation in Thailand
If anyone wants to get a covid test, any clinic or hospital will do it. If it comes back positive, the patient pays nothing. If it comes back negative, the patient pays 5,000 baht.
Thailand has a set of criteria (such as any one of cough, fever, pneumonia, close contact with known Covid patients) to class people as Patients Under Investigation (PUI). Testing is free for PUI's, whether Thai or Foreign. Since the last identified local transmission of Covid on 25 May approximately 90,000 PUI have been tested (Source: https://ddc.moph.go.th/viralpneumonia/eng/index.php).
Anyone who "wants to get a covid test" (your phrase), as opposed to needs a Covid test, pays (although the charge is waived in the event of a positive). Given the high level of self diagnosis and hypochondria evident in Thailand in normal times (just look at the number of pharmacies, even outside tourist areas) if testing were free for all it would undoubtedly result in a free-for-all which swamped the system, particularly as a negative test is only true for exactly zero hours - you can be infected but the virus load hasn't reached a detectable level yet, as evidenced by the returnees who are negative at the start of quarantine but positive when tested again prior to release from quarantine.
