I am about to buy a new phone (Galaxy S4) and was wondering how concerned I would need to be walking around Malate at night. Has anyone been or heard of someone being out right robbed?

I know kids and youth trying to pickpocket you fairly is fairly common. Although haven't heard much about violent style robberies. I was in Manila and walked around Malate at night in Feb for a few days and didn't have any issues, however that is a very small sample size.

I would be pretty pissed if my new 600 dolar phone got stolen.

So, keep it locked up and don't leave it lying around. I use a "Lifeproof" case for my iPhone and love it; it's not cheap, but well worth it. Not only utilizes a secure belt clip with a slide lock (not included; must be purchased separately) , but it's also water proof. Handy if you're out and get caught up in a rainstorm. They just introduced it for the S4, but I don't know about availability.

You're sitting at a bar texting someone, put it down, get distracted for a few minutes, and voila... it's gone. The loss of the phone sucks; the loss of all the contacts you've acquired is shattering. Having experienced this I've learnt a bit.

At a minimum: when you buy your SIM keep the PUK that the SIM is attached to. If the phone is lost or stolen you can go to a Smart or Globe office and recover your number by showing the clerk the PUK and paying a nominal fee. Though this doesn't recover your contacts and the messages, those who have you as their contact will still be able to sms / call you. There is one gotcha to be aware of: a SIM belongs to a series, so to recover the number a SIM of the same series needs to be used. In my unfortunate experience I had to travel far to distant Smart office that had the appropriate SIM.

Even better: back up your contacts (and messages) to your computer. If you can't be bothered or don't travel with a computer Smart offers an inexpensive backup service where your contacts are uploaded to their servers and can be retrieved. I reckon Globe offers a similar service.

Of course it's best to keep your phone safely in your pocket anytime you're not using it.

My recommendation is to purchase a cheaper smart phone (I use a samsux gt-s5360) at $100 - $150.

If people anywhere see you using a state-of-the-art new phone they will want to separate you from it.

Don't discount the possibility of violence being used either. It has certainly happened.

I actually use a very small Nokia phone as my 2nd phone when I travel around SE Asia that costs 800 php brand new from the Nokia shop.

Because I assume you just need a local number and second phone for calling or texting possible hook-ups or receiving messages from them then having a cheap and simple call and text phone means you can use it anywhere.

Keep the fancy phone for whatever else you need to do with it when you are in a secure location such as your room.

You don't need to be paranoid about answering a cheap phone or texting on the street or in a mall as nobody will take a scrap of notice if you have one.

I just booked 16 nights at the GoHotel near Robinsons Otis on Guazon Ave. Someone had previously told me about the hotel being new and clean for around 20 USD a night and that it didn't have any over night guest policy. However, during the booking process you must fill in your guest's name and ID number. I wrote in a fake name and ID obviously.

So now I am a little concerned. Has anyone stayed at the GoHotels or the one in question by Robsinsons Place Otis? Hopefully I do not have to cancel my reservations as it's great value for the money.

Additionally, how much would a taxi cost from there to Robinsons Malate? Could probably just hop on a jeepney as it's basically on the same road.

There are a few downfalls to them. Firstly, they are a major pain in the ass to use for texting; since I've been here I've never done so much texting in my life, and my thumbs were taking a severe beating. Secondly, you can save maybe 300 contacts. It got to the point that I was constantly having to delete a contact to add one, and inevitably a few weeks later I'd get a message from an "unknown" number belonging to a girl who was "known" to me; it's awkward to ask "Who's this?" and then receive a reply "It's ______, we met in _______. You don't remember me? Bye!" Moreover, the dumb phone limits the number of characters you can use to save a contact. I like to save not only her real name but also her dating site handle and the name of the dating site I met her. Thirdly, you can't store the same number of sms messages as can be done on a smart phone. It can be invaluable to reference long-ago messages. Lastly, smart phones are great for copying and pasting.

The silver lining to my loss of the Nokia was that I purchased a second-hand samsux smart phone that has significantly improved the quality of my life. An affordable smart phone is well worth the investment.

Anything of value. Your expensive phone comes in handy for taking pictures if your girl allows it.

Only take cheap phone and the amount of pesos necessary for the day. Pickpockets including girls are everywhere. There were some instances of robberies in Ermita area. Nowadays Police have set up new posts in some nooks and.

Corners. One such thing is near Swagman hotel. Although it does not eliminate anything it reduces bad people hanging around the area.

Generally armed robberies are less in tourist areas.

They will walk up asking for spare change, bump into you, then magically your pockets are empty. Lost a 100-dollar bill once as I was on the way to change money. These days I wear pants with zipper pockets, and hold my hands over the zippers whenever anyone gets near.

I see and partly do during my mongering sprees no problem in using expensive items. Ipads you can actually loose or someone steal it from you (happened to me but eventually today got it baxk for a fee) without anything bad can happen if you have good sexurity and never relieve tour personal password to others.
