Snowy,
Thailand's sextourist slums ARE a mega blast for any first time punter-visitor. You summed up the pros and cons yourself. OTH, Coma, Poster, et al, know these places inside out, back to front, and they all offer great insights. But if you decide to come to the party you really should come in at the main entrances. And If you like it so much that you keep coming back, you will find your own niche. There are many 'scenes' and many layers to each 'scene' in LOS.
Piper,
Don't be so hard on those 'old gits'. They're as entitled to pay for their luxuries as the rest of us. Buddha forbid I will make it to that sort of age. But if I do, I hope that if I'm 'old free and single' I'll be getting the much-appreciated attention of some lovely young hired sexworkers rather than the unwanted attention of some Nurse Ratchett character in some Buddha-forsaken [CodeWord140] and shit-fumed nursing home.
But I have to agree on the vests and shorts. Can't the Boys In Brown do something about this?
I’ve always considered I would like to get over to Bangkok at some point and whilst there are many other reasons outside of the sex scene, I would be lying if I said that the idea of an utterly debauched blow out wasn’t part of the attraction.
I work quite a lot in EE, especially Kiev and SPB, which ideally suits my favoured my female form. To be honest, a hedonistic trip to Asia has been delayed partly based on the likely stupidity of my end of trip report “Bangkok – great place; women insufficiently Slavic looking.”
I was interested in Old Thai Hand, JuiceSpike, Coma Boy and Piper1 all writing recent reports about Soi, NEP and the Beer Garden. These seem to constitute the mainstays of the beginner’s guide to punting in Bangkok and the general impression from those who have been around a bit seems overwhelmingly negative towards the standard places. It’s not uncommon in any area of the forum for “old hands” to a particular place to slam the most well-worn places and hark back to the good old days. It’s a continuum throughout the board – those who have been going somewhere for 10 years, yearn for the place of 5 years ago, those who have going there for a year, yearn for six months ago.
So my question to the regulars of the forum (finally!) is this – assuming I only have time to visit BKK for a few days and not get out to the real Thailand and, as a novice to the area, would probably do the trad beginner’s circuit, do you still rate BKK as worth a visit from a purely hedonistic perspective? Is this part of the circuit truly that grim or does it just seem so poor based on your richer knowledge of Thailand and memories of what BKK used to be and, as a one off blast, BKK is still actually a riot?
In the meantime, Piper1's post has made me choose -14 over 90 degrees...and for this sir, I thank you from the bottom of 6ft blonde I intend to find in the very near future.
Snowy,
You already know the answer: if you have an open mind about the type of girls you'll meet in the above mentioned places in BKK, you could have a lot of fun. If you are looking for a particular type of girl (a random example: slavic), you'd be disappointed. Thal girls generally are smaller than Caucassians. Most Thai girls would be spinners relative to white women; however, once, you're there, you'll start looking for spinners (if you are into them). In any case, I think every man - no matter age, marital status, etc., - must visit BKK at least once in his life. You'll notice that Thai working girls are very service oriented. They want to please you (you can be a cynic and say for their own selfish reasons) as best as they can. They are offended if you don't "finish" with them (one time, 15 min after I finished with a girl, I had another girl give me a BBBJ for 45 min just to make sure I "finished"!). Not too many places in the world this happens. Sure there are TGs who want to get their damn money and move on, but in my experience it is a rarity.
The whole NEP, Beer Garden, Sukhumvit scene is a little sleazy to be sure. But, there are enough other "normal" people walking around (at least during reasonable hours) that you don't feel too self-conscious. Also, the ease with which you can pick up chicks makes it a fun place. I am pretty sure you'll have a great time in BKK - especially if it's your first time. Yes, even at places that the "old hands" put down. I am not much into the go-go scene and more into the FL scene. Beer Garden is hit and miss - when I was there in 2004, it was terrible. Last June, it was not too bad. The other place I frequent is Gulliver's Tavern on Soi 5. Lots of FLs. I also go to Nana Disco almost every night (or is that early morning?). The variety is there. Just keep an open mind and you'll have a blast.
Cheers.

Piper,
Always enjoyed your intelligent and thought-provoking posts here and elsewhere. Would like to meet you some time (No, that is NOT a come-on). Anyway, interesting take on BKK scene. From a viewpoint, I agree with you. If you start thinking with your big head about these working girls, the whole scene (their situation, lack of options, us being there, etc.) can be very depressing. I don't think this is unique to BKK. It's just that BKK has a huge scene and almost every WG there has a (probably true) sob story. Let's face it - for many women being a WG is a last resort. The farangs on Suk, of course, are a whole different story.
Cheers.

Bier Garden
Granted, the Bier Garden is hit or miss and usually miss but every now and then you find a rose among the thorns.
I met this gal at the Bier Garden around noon one day and ended up taking her back to the Marriott for some fun & games. She looked kind of cute running around the pool in her little blue thong. No complaints from the guys but there were 3 mad cows basking their big heavy bodies in the sun who seemed to disapprove. Oh well, I am sure they got over it sooner or later.
Kept her till 6pm and sent her on her way with 1,000 BT and a smile. Really nice attitude and fun to play with.

NEP, Beergarden, etcetera, are disgusting and crap, but that doesn't stop me still visiting regularly after all these years. A lot of the women at Beergarden are older and heavier than me, yet I still sometimes fuck them. That is why I use the PB Hotel so that my building's security don't spot me with grim old ladies.
Sometimes disgusting = awesome.
I often think I hate NEP, then a friend hits town and I have to show him the sights, and I have an amazing night there.
Snowy, come, see, conquer.

Rose among the thorns???
Capt JB
I generally never comment on pics posted on this site, especially in the Photo Gallery as I figure that " to each, his own." However, in general I find 99% of the the pics on the Thai thread are of rather ordinary to downright ugly Thai women, (with the exception of Coma Boy's gyno shots; but that's because I was pre-med once, so have an interest...lol).
Posting a pic of this rather long-in-the-tooth "girl" (although I bet she's not even 30 yet), and calling her a "Rose among Thorns" as a response to the criticism of the Beer Garden opens you up to at least a bit of ridicule in using her as in some way disproving the thesis. I think she actually proves the point made by myself and others that the women in the Beer Garden are universally horrible with few exceptions.
If you had fun with her, more power to you. But, don't set her up as an example of a beautiful Thai woman because she isn't, not by any kind of definition.
And...before someone responds to me by saying, "well then, you post some pics of beautiful Thai women", I'll answer that, I can't. The women I shag are mostly not P4P and therefore I can't post their pics on this site. I made that mistake once and had to have them removed.

cb, i concur...crap...but....always worth a fresh look.
i feel the same way...hate the places, but can't stay away. i will say that certain bars at nep are at least worth a look and you might find something fun. pretty lady, mandarin, those bars at the top of the concrete stairs on the left and straight back (never can remember their names) and the one with the 3rd floor "schoolgirl" vip area with the glass-floor down to the lower level. you have to watch some of the schoolgrils there as they really are actually almost that...several are ****. i know of at least 2 that are 15, 16 years old. others are 17. they are with 1 or 2 exceptions all very young there. but, i like it coz several are from places other than isaan, like kamphaeng phet, the jewel of the north as far as consistently beautiful women. on one of those very rare occasions when i actually take a p4p, i took a fairly hot girl (probably not as smokin' as havrum's...lol) from kamphaeng phet, who, unfortunately was only there for a short time. great face, great body, white skin and a lovely disposition....everything that is a beautiful thai woman, in my opinion.
i used to like lollipop. but, i haven't been there for a long time.
generally, you have to keep going back because one time the girls might be completely ropey and disgusting and the next time there may have a whole new crop who are not too shabby. it is one of the little joys of living here. being a visitor is tough because you have to try to cram it all in during a relatively short time...kind of like gulping your wine (or plonk) instead of sipping it.

I was expecting a few flames in response to my impressions of my brief visit to BKK. Instead, I get agreement or gentle disagreement. What happened guys? Taking happy pills? ;)
I don't want to give the impression it's not worth a visit - it definitely is, and I will be going back. Monger's disneyland. What I meant was that I saw a lot of sad sad people. Again, I was only in the NEP/Suk area, and only for two days, so it was a limited view. Many members have PMd me to say that life in Thailand away from these places is awesome. A close family member stayed with a middle-class Thai family in BKK for 3 months, rarely got to see the mongering scene, and loved the place and people.
As for the "old gits" being propped up by the young gals - that'll be me in 40 years (maybe even 20 years if I plan it right).
cheers

you need not have worried. your impressions, at least of nep and the suk. area around it were pretty well on the money. there are a lot of lost souls down there, especially those guys who just don't know when to go home, until they can't. a lot of over-40/over-50 and older english teachers come to mind. i know of one guy in his mid-40s, who gave up a good job in construction to move here. he has no education, but after years of toil had moved up to a management position and a decent salary. here, he is all but unemployable except at some low-rent english school that pays 250 baht/hour if you're lucky and doesn't ask too many questions about qualifications. but, that's where he and countless guys like him will languish for eternity until they're too old to even do that. i hear he's in love with some shady girl and spending his savings to build a house for her. it's an all-too familiar story of loss, without the redemption or salvation.
life for those of us who only go to nep and other places like it for a bit of a laugh is decidely different. i love this country and would never dream of going home. but, that's because i've made a normal life for myself here. i have an excellent job (actually 2) that nearly pays american level wages and good friends who also work at good jobs. i have many thai friends who know little or nothing of the bar scene. i am friends with dozens of regular thai women (apart from my female students, who number in the hundreds) who are completely different than the girls most foreigners encounter at places like nep. this is why i sometimes get bent out of shape when punters here talk about thai girls when they mean bargirls, who in reality represent a relatively small percentage of thai womanhood and certainly aren't representative of them.
i'll admit that i am approaching geezer-status (i'm 53) and also that i am usually propped up by, or at least accompanied by one young lovely or other. but, i don't wear muscle shirts (even at the gym) or those shiny speedo shorts that allow your balls to hang out (yechhhhh!) or flip flops. i can still pull regular thai girls like this because i'm presentable, know how to talk to them and have status here. that counts far more than money.
this is a wonderful country, with great people and a fantastic lifestyle exclusive of the bar-scene. but, the problem is that many guys never get past that and wind up teetering on the edge of the abyss.

More Biergarten
I'm just going to chime in here on the Biergarten. Its true that the core group of girls who "work" at the place are not the prettiest or the youngest in BKK, but there are a lot of girls who drop in occassionally needing money to pay their phone bill or whatever who can be pretty hot.
It IS sort of a zoo and it can be a fun place of great amusement just for that reason, you can make of it what you want. I've been bored there, had shitty times, met some of the wierdest people in the world, met very interesting travelers and expats, relaxed, contemplated my place in the universe, practiced Thai, gone with stretch mark queens, hardened ho's, regulars, part timers, and girls who've been in BKK one day and never slept with a farang. The one thing in common is that I've never gone there expecting too much; things just seem to happen.
When I'm in BKK I live on soi 11 so when I come home from work late in the afternoon its basically on my way and I stop in for a beer or an iced coffee at least a couple of times a week. Its always the same old, wierd place, but it seems to be subtly different each time I go there.
I certainly don't think its the kind of place to make as your focus of mongering time and attention, but its a hell of a fun place to go at four or five in the afternoon.
Cheers,
Sean

Rose among the thorns???
Come on, OTH
That was not nice to say. I find the woman pretty ok, average looking and seems to have a good personality. She is far better looking than 90% of the pics posted here. But calling her ugly?
In your defense you claim that you cannot show pics of your ho's as they are Uni students. If you cannot show your definition of beauty, please do not put others down.
Peace. :D

Crypton, you've stroked my fragile male ego, but I still won't go out with you. I'm way too expensive. ;) Looks like you've been around a few places and have some experience (Sydney! Anyone would think it was a hot place for mongering. From my experience, just as easy to get a freebie there, especially the tourists after midnight).
A much-experienced ISG member PMd me today about BKK. His one-week plan is to be a bachelor-monger for a couple of days, and find a suitable TG to take him around some places in Thailand the next few days as a GF/guide/translater. Great idea. I may even do the same in June - would add that extra dimension.
cheers

Piper - make sure you take a test drive before rental. SOME are cold starfish and you don't want to get saddled with them for more than "necessary"

Gulliver Tavern-Soi 5
Ive been to the Beer Garden and agree its all hit or miss--it was mostly miss when I went there for a few days.
I also dropped by the Gulliver Tavern when nobody nice was at the Garden, but didnt even notice any FL there during the afternoon, maybe they blended in with the regular people eating? is there a better time to visit this place for FL pickup--as perhaps I went too early?
