That's an academic discussion about the term "girlfriend". In more practical terms, for certain guys, if they don't pay up, the woman will no longer be around. They prefer to avoid that, perhaps because they don't find it easy to get a comparable partner.
Although ideally, both partners should pull their weight in the relationship, it's not exactly unheard of for the bulk of resources to flow from the man to the woman.
