Reading up on a wiki, it was said that Kota, or North Jakarta is the better place to be. Looking at the map, I consider places like Alexis and Golden Crown to be in that area.
Better place to be to go where? It depends where you want to go. I thought you said you wanted to go to Malioboro and CJs. Alexis is so far north that it's basically in Ancol. The further towards Ancol you get, the further you are away from anything else in Jakarta other than Ancol. (Alexis is closed.) If you intend on spending your time at Golden Crown, Orchardz spa, Club 36, Penjay, Hotel Travel, or Lokasari, then it might make sense sacrificing quality of hotel and staying further north. But Malioboro, Hotel Classic, Emporivm, and places like CJs and BATS are further down and you can get a nicer hotel.
If you want to go to Malioboro, you can stay in a very nice hotel at Harris Vertu right across the street from Malioboro and can walk there. If you want to go from there to Hotel Classic, you just turn left on Jalan Juanda and then left again and you are there in a few minutes. If you want to go to CJs, that is way on the other side of town regardless of where you stay in North Jakarta. There is a bus station right in front of that Harris hotel and you can take the bus to Kota station in about 5 minutes if you so desire. Keep in mind that if you want to stay near Mangga Dua mall (in between Alexis and Golden Crown and the true definition of the "Kota" area), all of the hotels in that area are shitty relative to a hotel like Harris Vertu. It's not as if Malioboro and Golden Crown are far apart. They are not.
So, I'm nitpicking here, but most of what usually is referred to as "Kota" is actually not North Jakarta but West and Central. For example Malioboro falls under the Central Jakarta district, as does Hotel Classic, however Colosseum and Travel are under West Jakarta.
Alexis is pretty much where North Jakarta starts, and if looking on a map is pretty much in the middle of that district, from Pantai Indah Kapuk in the west till Tanjung Priuk in the east.
Nitpickmode / off.
Ha. I'll have to go into that explanation the next time I ask one of my expat friends living in South Jakarta if he wants to go to Malioboro and he answers with "I'm not going to North Jakarta, the traffic sucks up there!"
I like your premier movie idea. A movie like Benjamin button would be the perfect choice. Find a movie that will bore the girl so she will focus on you.
I am a regular to Bali never have a problem meeting ladies, but am about to embark on my 1st trip to Jakarta.
Not at all in to the late night scene, I will be crashing by 11 pm as early morning starts.
Any suggestions on a not to expensive hotel that is close to a mall or establishment that will have a choice available late afternoon. Early night?
Would appreciate any intro to ladies, happy to reward all be it my capabilities are restricted to under an hour these days.
Feel free to PM me as opposed to cramming the site with what may be obvious to most.
Looking forward to my trip, none the least as be alone.
Pedro.
This is quite helpful Smoothy. Many thanks. I only have three days in Jakarta so I am staying at Classic then Tematik then Faletehaln. I hope I made some good choices. Are any of the movie theatres near any of these?

Guys,
Has anybody been to the Blok lately since Top Gun has closed? Heading into town in a few weeks and have a free night (unfortunately a Sunday) to do a bit of late night bar hoping. Was wondering if My Bar and Dee's have picked up any of the slack or the death of Blok M is nigh and I may as well go to CJ's or BATS. Where do girls form CJ's and BATS drag their ass to these days if they don't get any business, doubt they're heading to Kemang. Might have to be a quick WeChat run to fill some boredom as I suspect Sunday is going to be dead in that part of town.
Thanks in advance.
Re: "Kota", My old monger board used that as an abbreviation for Kota Inda.
Interesting to see Smoothy reference Penjay. I realize it's not for the rookies here, but it gets precious little mention.
I'll be at grand Indonesia mall for lunch. Which is the best spa in the area to go after lunch?

Interesting to see Smoothy reference Penjay.
Unfortunately, like Blok M, it's a spot of former good memories that has gone downhill relative to other options.
If you want to try an old time place that is rarely ever mentioned but has been restored to a point that is nicer than it ever was but the price remained low, try Medika (they call it New Medika now I think, but it's the same place). It's in an area with a lot of traffic until late evening, so wait until then to go. The rooms are nice and there are some nice girls there for less than 400 k. They used to have a topless female DJ, but with the new regulations, I doubt it anymore.
New Medika.

Sunday is dead everywhere else too, just not as dead. Maybe try CJs, but don't expect much.

Thanks, yeah I was expecting as much. Used to spend a lot of time in Jakarta Mon-Sat, only ever had a couple of Sunday nights in town and I used them like the girls probably do. To recover. I did find some recent reviews on My Bar via google that suggests that it is still relatively busy in the late night hours, especially later in the week. Maybe give it a look on my next trip, although going by current frequency the blok will probably be under renovation by then!
I'm.
Made a huge mistake wasting time checking out Blok M last night. Never again! Friday night from 11 pm to 1240 am wasted in my life. Thought I was in Texas when I walked in to DS place. Country music. Wtf. At least DS place had one very pretty gogo girl. Slim with very short hair. Busty too. Eastern promise was worse for girls. Average age maybe 40 to 45 for girls. The band was amazing at eastern promise though. Walked into a couple of other bars there like my place but totally dead.
Did not go to octagon. Rushed back to go to hotel travel. Any info on octagon? Taxi driver recommended dragonfly but said girls 3 million. No thanks.
Bottom line I still like seeing gogo girls dancing. Can someone list the bars that still have gogo girls, even if not topless?
At least DS place had one very pretty gogo girl. Slim with very short hair. Busty too.
If you liked one, you should have tried the VIP room. You can take those girls in the back VIP room at D's and fuck them or get a BJ if you want. Just have to negotiate price with them. That's a unique experience going back there and would have been worth trying once if you did have your eye on a girl.
The best time to go to D's is just prior to 2am because the girls at the Karaoke next door (I think the place is called Oktagon or something like that) finish their shift and sometimes come in and check for possible customers at that time. Some of those karaoke girls are nice. I wouldn't say that D's place plays country music very often. They mainly play pop and rock. But they mix in country and my favorite - indonesian dangdut. I can't complain about the music there, I like that they mix it up.
After 2am, if no sexy karaoke girls wander into D's place, you can walk next door and check out My Bar since it doesn't even have any customers until around 2am anyway.
I agree though, the Blok is basically now dead. Damn shame. It used to be awesome.
Unfortunately I couldn't talk to her she was with a guy already.
