Just in time for my trip, the prices at 4 X 4 have gone up once again :eek::mad:. Seems like they follow my itinerary very closely. It didn't help that the place was as slow as I've ever seen it (In our favor). Anyways, here is to making up for lost business, local style:

The entrance fee remains the same (40 reals). According to the girls, they don't see any of this price increase; the last one was split between them and the house. that is some funny shit since it didn't happen to me. i hope you cursed the doorman out though. they should not be revealing your personal business to people. i would also ***** at whoever rented me the apartment and try to get some money back and/or change places. if you do, remember to make friends with the doorman right off the bat. buy him a pizza or bring him a burger or something. i never have that kind of problem with non-pros because the ones without a car know that they will show up and i'm subject not to be there so it will be a wasted trip. the ones with a car are usually those that will show up at random.

rofl. yes, you screwed up, but this has happened to everyone who mixes non-pros with - ahem - prostitutes - lol.

there are two ways to get round it. both of them very 'respectable.'

1. tailor your non-gdp activities towards the end of your stay. that way you can reciprocate some genuine respect, lay off the gdp and enjoy the whole giorlfriend buzz.

2. and this would surely be common sense if you think about it - instead of doggying on your doorstep, go to an establishment provided for the purpose. no, not those gringoholes like help. termas, whether posh ones (perhaps not right outside the siquera campos metro station haha) like 4x4 or filth ones like the centro 1r a minute joints.

methods 1 and 2 can be combined of course, if the need takes you ;) ;)

In addition to trying to recruit the doorman of your apt. building as an ally, you might want to consider using some of the inexpensive love motels for takeout from Help, especially if it's a girl you don't know as some of these Help chicas are thieves/dishonest. But you'll still need a good excuse for not answering her phone calls right away! ;) Maybe say something like some early morning sight-seeing before the main wave of tourists.

Another strategy I recently thought up and may try one day is renting out a bed at a hostel and having the non-pro think that's where you're staying, although such a complicated ruse may not be worth the extra $$ and hassle for most guys/situations.

When it comes to the doorman phoning up, I've had problems even when I did want to take the call:

The doorman thinks you're out when you're not

The buzzer doesn't work well

You can't hear the buzzer from the other room/balcony/shower/kitchen/over the sound of frying salgados and eminem

You had your headphones on listening to music

Be sure to set up all these excuses early on - eg letting her see you wear headphones, shouting from the other room that you can't hear her, mentioning that the buzzer doesn't work very well. If I have a girl visiting, I always stress that she should phone me just before she arrives so I know to look out for her.

True, especially in Copa. So it helps to change the way people look at you. I practice by spending time with friends who own shops or work at the Uni.

Here's some suggestions:

Have a strong interest in something that justifies your reason for existing / being in Rio. If you were doing your home job (something you know about and can spin convincingly on presumably) but doing it while you were here, what would you be doing? Researching future work? Looking for job opportunities on behalf of your company? Yourself? How about doing some part-time location work?

One of the first questions you get (if you don't look an utter sleaze) is, Are you here for work or holiday? You can be a bit hesitant and say a bit of both. Keep it very vague. Let them think you are meant to be working even if you have all the time in the world. When you have enough of her for the day and have some urgent business in 4x4 it stops all arguments. Centro is a good place to be 'doing business' - she is unlikely to just bump into you unless she also has a job in Centro.

Take a genuine interest in Brasil for god sake. I am almost allergic to mongers whose sole purpose is mongering - nothing wrong with going to Rio solely for mongering, it's just me. But seriously consider having an experience of a lifetime that doesn't involve pussy. Brasil can change the way you think about the world. Once you genuinely develop a love of the music, the dancing, carnaval, the culture, the geography, the language, the politics - anything else that interests you - you will start to radiate that and be able to undercut gdps whose sole 24hr mental preoccupation is selling their bodies. For the more human gdps or gfe types, it establishes a level of communication that is genuine.

Get to know how mongering is viewed by mainstream (non-mongering) Brasilian society. This enables you to take the same slightly high ground attitude when it suits you. Your gdp feels like an exception and your non-gdp 'knows' your not the sort that would go with a 'prostitute'. (Remember as well, any gdp lower down the food chain than your gdp is a 'prostitute' whereas your gdp is not. One [i]feels sorry[/i] for such people. The very term tends to mean, 'the sort of sexually active person we would not associate with' - which is a bit broader than anything as specific as the exchange of money.)

Have an excuse for staying in Copa. Everyone in Copa needs one. Have an area you'd rather stay in (mine's Botafogo) but point out how Copa is more convenient for a foreigner.

Have some 'friends' (imaginary ones will do) that you may have to meet from time to time to hang out with and discuss serious areas of non-mongering stuff (which you will have have set up in advance in her mind using the above pretexts).

Have a non-gringo topic to enthuse about at the start of any conversation. 'The lovely people' or 'the beaches' or 'the weather' is lame. One visit to a museum is enough to set you up for plenty of meets. Especially as her mental level is mostly in the gutter a few centimetres above your natural resting place.

This will not suit everyone, but for those who like this route and have the inclination, you may discover it is a lot of fun! You may almost start to find your time in Rio is even more rewarding than you imagined.
