Going to drive people away? That happened years ago. I used to go to Rio 3 times a Winter. Now I generally go to the DR or Colombia. And on these trips, I always run into lots of former Rio enthusiasts. The amount of guys still hitting Rio is a fraction of what it was up to 5-10 years ago.
Rio is a fantastic place, possibly my favorite City in the World. But the cost, as well as the overnight flight, make other options quite attractive.

In Oglobo yesterday. Procon, the consumer protection agency put out an alert about an ongoing Taxi meter scam. At the beginning of the year, a 12% fare increase was authorized. Because the taxi meter were not adjusted immediately, the taxi drivers used a price tablet to determine the fare. Now, most of the meters have been adjusted, but some taxi drivers continue to use the price tablet to rip off fares. Procon advises to check for two things: see that the fare begins at $R4.80 and that the meter has a blue tag, instead of an orange one, (see attached pic). The taxi driver may state, he can use the price tablet until June 6, (not true). Should the taxi driver charge more, call Procon at 1746, include the taxi license plate numer, date and place of occurrence. A complaint can also be sent via email. Watch for tips being added to your bill. Bartenders are trying to put pressure on you for tips. Ladies are trying to add tips by calling front desk from room after session. I have been coming to 4 x4 for 8 years and never had this issue before. At bill time reception wiped off all tips when I pointed it out on final bill. Be aware.

My sister works for the airlines and one of my best friends works for marriott so I never really cared about costs. LOL. I've been spending little to nothing (flight and lodging) on my trips for years. But I do understand how others feel. For me Rio has always been about the experience. In my opinion the other options you mentioned don't compare to Rio in experience. The DR, while they do have a lot of stunnas, is a step down from Rio in talent and def in performance. Same with Columbia. I think Columbia is slightly ahead of DR in talent but their performance / attitudes suck compared to Rio. So removing cost considerations Rio still wins hands down. However, I will occasionally check out Sosua, CR, etc because they are still a great time and I can do quick trips there. 3-4 days.
