{S N I P} I gave up trying to strike logic with the types like above, and stick with those who don't follow the Filipino thinking that its OK to ask money from even little bit rich folks, OK even bit richer looking folk.
And add to it, that their culture accept it, including forgiving robbers as they maybe robbing due to family emergency etc. As a Filipino friend described. When her jeepney was robbed the robbers had apologized and the victims felt sympathy to the culprits.
{S N I P}
I can't explain the logic! Probably impossible for us to fully understand.
My Filipina ex-wife never used to complain about being taken advantage of, even when one relative stole expensive sheets and towels from the apartment over a period of some weeks.
Apart from the relative to whom I 'loaned' money for the bike, all my 'investments' were carefully screened, and a few paid big dividends in other ways! Anyway, I am glad that I was able to help some girls, girls who I felt were more responsible than your typical Filipina.
I have a good sixth sense and intuition, and only once have I stupidly believed a story that was so incredible, I felt she could not be making it up! But they don't give up. One girl has continued to send me YM messages every few months for the past 5 years!
If the girls put as much effort and creativity into getting work and a career of some sort, as they put into their stories, then their poverty would be significantly reduced. On the other hand, maybe the story business is a highly lucrative career for some of the girls!
And I will certainly continue to help deserving people when I can. And not necessarily sexy young Pinay. Some years ago I paid boarding and tuition fees in Australia for the son of a Christian Balinese family I met and stayed with in Bali (there are a few Christian villages in the Western part of the island, although they are persecuted by the Hindu majority).
What is the old saying about Westerners in developing countries? There are mercenaries, missionaries, misfits and mongerers! I am not sure which category I belong to! Maybe all!
Cheers.
The more money you loan (with no return.) the most liked and generous you are said to be...And add to it, that their culture accept it,
Unnerving. What's a regular guy to do if he wants to live peaceably in the PI?
Unnerving. What's a regular guy to do if he wants to live peaceably in the PI?
Keep moving around, keep changing numbers, and only give new numbers to the ones you want to keep.
And develop a heart harder than titanium for the multitude of sob stories that will come your way.
And develop some great replies... Ie.
"I would love to help you but my bank account was hacked so no spare cash".
" My wallet was snatched and so all my spare cash gone".
" My money is locked up in a court case with ex wife, will be happy to help you when its settled.
" I gave a girl a loan of P20,000 and she never paid it back so now I'm very wary".
" No I won't loan you anything till I have a 3 some with you and your younger cousin".

No one will read it... I clearly state an age requirement of less than 40, weight requirement of about 100 pounds and location in Manila only.
Invariably, its Hi I'm Veronica from Zamboanga and I'm 52 and I'm chubby, can I be your friend.
Mongering veteran, but first time ISG member. Ill be visiting Manila in a few weeks. Did some research on this forum and found few of the mongering areas: Makati & Ermita. I was wondering if anyone else can suggest any other areas for first time visitors on a budget.
Thanks
Like many Asian countries, there tends to be a few main areas where foreigners are specifically catered. You have identified the main MM areas (and add Malate which is an older, more dangerous district adjoining Ermita).
For locals there are generally many other options, and where local prices are paid, not the inflated foreigner price.
As you are a veteran mongerer, and therefore adventurous, ask a taxi driver for other places (and tell us your tales)!
Cheers.

So Eurotel is in Malate; Robinsons is in Ermita.
You are splitting hairs when you discuss the relative difference between these places, especially when you are talking about a block or two either side of Pedro Gil.
They are both in the City of Manila, and both are relative slums. Slippery is correct in that as you go further south towards Pasay the environment "improves", but not dramatically.

BTW did an ad in CL, and 9 out of 10 response was from LBs, though some said they are LB, most didn't. Though by attaching a picture the mystery was solved.

I definitely want to have fun, but be safe at the same time. So, Malate is "safe", if one had to choose. I would really appreciate some reccomendations for a bar / establishement that is "safe", decent (ladies), and cheap for someone on a budget. I promise to report on my experiences once I return from my trip.
Thank you

Like the inner areas of many big cities, the atmosphere changes from block to block. And you can find a wide range of attractions within. Many of the hotels recommended here are on the Malate side of Pedro Gil.
