I recently spent a few weeks in Davao. I switched hotels every few days to avoid past Pinays from showing up at my door unannounced.

Stayed the first night at the Casa Leticia because I knew it had nice rooms and had plenty of WIFI options so that I could watch my American Ball games on my laptop.They have wifi on each floor and also the next door 24 hour convenience store had wifi also. They wanted 2600 peso but gave me a 10 percent discount after I asked for a lower price.

The Hotel is nice and has a great location across from the Peoples Park. Last year I did have a problem with them trying to charge me for an extra night, it was not on purpose, just they were not well organized. Also I was going to try the free breakfast one morning, but was told "sorry sir, we are closed at 10:30" I tried to point out that it was only 10am, but was only given a blank stare in response. Also the housekeeper woke me up at 9:00 am one day to inventory the refrigerator.

I returned to the Ponce Suites again this trip. The place is a dump and if you have anything valuable with you, I would stay else ware. Anyone can walk up to your door because security will not stop them at the door because they need to pass the hotel rooms to get to the cafe on the 2nd floor or the bar on the roof. Also came home twice to find the desk girl and guard sleeping. You have to ask for a remote for the TV, some rooms don't have one.

The upside is the rooms are around 800-900 pesos a night and in some of the rooms you can use the free wifi from the cafes. It is hard to flag a taxi, but you can have the desk girl call one for you and they arrive quick.



The Orange Grove hotel is kind of far from any action and is the only place I felt nervous about walking the streets during the day. The rooms were around 1300 and nice and large. I had a room with one with a big bed and a small couch for visitors. There were no close American Style fast food places, but there was a 24 hour convenience store next door. It was a pain in the ass to find a taxi, but I would always have the guard run up the street and flag one down for me. (40 peso tip normally). They did have strong wifi for 150 peso a day.


Last place I stayed in Davao was "My Hotel". The hotel was very clean inside and only 3 years old. I believe the rooms were around 1000 peso. I liked that the security was active there and they had cameras down each hallway. The locations seemed to be right in the center of the evening action. I was able to walk to many clubs, restaurants, Peoples Park and Hot Legs. If I felt like grabbing a taxi, they were constantly driving by. They offer free wifi in some of the areas and the lobby. Just make sure to check how strong the signal is before you pick a room.

The only negative I had with the place is the lack of a fridge and the bathroom is a shower/ toilet room.

I just booked a room through Agoda.com at the Marco Polo for 7 nights at $58 a night (plus tax), including breakfast. The total charge for 7 nights, including tax and fees, was $490. That's the best I've seen it at Marco Polo for a long time. Usually, they want about $100 a night plus tax.

I'm sure I could find many cheaper hotels, but when I am on vacation, I want to be pampered.

This ended with the new General Manager wanting to up my Rate which I would NOT permit. Fuck No! As I live in Davao I do not of course ataxy in hotels there. However I did live at the MP for four four months when I first arrived seven years ago, so I'm somewhat familiar with the hotel, and obviously an all-in rate of $76 is a great deal. I've been told, by excellent sources, that the hotel is in trouble, asarently it's either losing money pr not making very much, and I suppose this is an attempt to attract more customers. I do know that the Marco Polo chain just signed a contract to manage the hotel for another four years, so I suppose the quality standards will be maintained.

I was told that the rooms have not been thoroughly renovated for ten years or so, and therefore, extensive renovations are now due.

We are sponsoring a conference at the Apo View this week, and I was there for an hour or so on Monday morning to give some remarks. When leaving, I noticed the GM in the lobby, and he's a friend, so I stopped to have a coffee with him and then wandered around a little as I had not been there for a while. I guess I had forgotten what a lovely property it is. The garden, which can be viewed from the main dining area is truly beautiful and the dining area itself, called Entrée, is, as DS has noted, simply beautiful. All in all, I think it's more attractive than the Marco Polo, but of course it does not have all the amenities offered by the latter.

There are so many two and three floor hotels going up all per town, that I would guess the larger hotels--aand the Apo and the MP are really the only large hotels--are feeling the price pressure. This is especially true since most Filipinos shop by price, and most hotel guests in the city are Filipino.

A friend in the hotel business in Davao told me that the city is not a good venue for five star hotels as the city doesn't attract a large enough, constant stream of visitors willing to pay five star prices. The same friend told me that the rumored construction of a Marriott at the new Ayala Center is baseless and that, while there will be a hotel at the center, it will not be a deluxe hostelry.
