Here is the only thought I have regarding your question of choosing between hotel and a private apartment. Given that you are a self-confessed greenhorn, I think, it might be safer for you to choose a hotel in that the really serious hotels. Terra Linda is one if I recall correctly, retain the PHOTO I'd of guests which is a good safeguard. I am not sure if a private residence have such a facility unless it is part of a condo, in which case they may but I really do not know.

I also never asked anyone to spend the night. Got the phone numbers and arranged to have them visit me during the daytime. Daytime is safer and cheaper. Of course, once you get to know someone and you are comfortable which you likely would be after a month, you are then in a position to judge if you can invite someone / s for the night as well.

My experience with hotels in Sosua is limited. I stayed at a place called Romanoff once ($30 / night?) and another time at Casa Valeria ($50 / night?). Both were ok for me. The last is really a stone's throw (the other is a 10 minute walk) to the main street where action is but security did not check any I'd in either of these places. And guests were welcome.

Also check this. I very much liked the look of the place. Quiet private apartment and the view was. Well you see the photos; you can quiz Scotch who stayed there, about price and security etc.

No matter whether a hotel or an apartment, on long term stays like yours, you should / must negotiate the price. I am sure there are others on this board who will chime in with their helpful suggestions as well.

In France the schools are closed the whole of July and August, and with at least 5 weeks / year of paid holidays, pretty much everything stops.

I think you're right with the safety issue. I was also looking at Cabarete which seems to have a few nice hotels (as I said it's not just for mongering so kitesurfing is on the menu). And maybe taking a room for the night in Sosua when needed (I was considering going mostly to Passions which seems easier for a newbie with zero Spanish like myself).

This is the exact reason why I do not give out my email or US cell number to chicas. Too much temptation to do something I would regret. The way I look at it, she is 18+ and whatever she has been doing all of these years to survive must have been working for her. It'll continue to work for her once I am gone as well. There is nothing I could do that would make things any better for her or change her situation. I've already done my part by paying for her services. It is just that when I landed in Sosua my very first time, I did not do any of these. I have moved since and so the game has changed somewhat. These are people who speak with me over various media. Not only their phone number, for some, I even have their cedula numbers and so forth. In one instance, I have been to a woman's work place. You are absolutely right, nothing one can do will change the lot for these women and that is why, I have no condition attached. I do not expect them not to see others. In fact I encourage it (so that they cannot be jealous of me seeing others even though I keep each in her watertight compartment) nor do I pay on a periodic basis and when I do, I make it very clear that no quid pro quo is expected. There are also examples when my offer to help was summarily rejected, because of fear that a quid pro quo is expected.

I do have to recount one episode though. I met a young woman, I think it was September last year. The proud mom came in with her baby. A little, I think. 3-4 month old boy plus her girl friend should help be required. I thought she expected too much of me so I cut her loose after that meal at a mall and did not stay in touch. Earlier this year, she contacted me, evidently she did not delete my contact details. When I asked her about her baby son, she said, the boy passed away. He had some problem for which she took him to a hospital where he got some new infection and never recuperated. I have to say she broke my heart with that. Obviously when guys continue to send financial support in absentia, it is because they like the young women concerned, and have most likely met their families, children, etc. And want to make sure that they are okay and have enough to get some basics of life.

These expenses are fairly low compared to equivalents in the US, but then again where do the mothers get the $35 from?

Yes, they can have sex with more men, maybe, if they can find men who will pay them, but even that requires financial investment in hairstyling, makeup, clothing, etc. And they may not be able to get the money in the time frame they need it.

So I am more or less with tempoecorto on this. If you can afford it, it is better to give unconditionally, then at least you will know that the child didn't die for lack of treatment when you could have helped. However you will have no absolute guarantee that the money was used for legitimate purposes, though you will be reasonably sure that your funds have helped the Dominican balance of payments overall and that your money will circulate in the local economy.

Yes, sometimes they will lie, and there may be deception. One board member who lived for a year in Sosua has said here that he believes that the vast majority of chicas are financially supporting male Dominicans. While this may be the case, I think the number is probably exaggerated, but you COULD be sending money to support a male Dominican.

So overall I would say be careful who you give your home telephone number or e-mail to, because if a chica asks for these, it is almost certain that they will be seeking some kind of closer involvement, and if you cannot give that, then it is probably better for all concerned that there is no open channel of communication.

On the other hand, one should not completely rule out the possibility of relationships developing over time. Probably the vast majority of expatriates who now live in the DR arrived as mongers, and yet it is probably true to say that a large percentage of those eventually settled down with Dominican (or Haitian) girlfriends, some of whom were no doubt initially encountered in the commercial sex arena.
