It is about 45 min drive from Cabarete going west. It is a very nice beach and you can get some of the food vendors to set up a chair for you at the beach and have some fresh fish or lobsters cook for you right there on the beach. I also saw online some great reviews of a tour operator called NJOY. I am planning to contact them when I am there to spend a day fishing and snorkeling. I will be there from July 24 to August 14th. Just another "data point"; this is first-hand and went down last Friday.

Had been on- and off w / a chica for three weeks but had declined her company over the last several days. She knew that I was departing the next day, and felt she deserved more money for our time together. I politely declined the request and left the strip at 2 am w / another female friend in tow.

At 9:20 am the next morning there is a knock on my door (I was still in bed) , and I am being served w / a Notice to Appear at 10 am at the fiscalia to sort out the dispute. Immediately contacted friends (expats, and Dominicans) who advised me to ignore the Notice. What would happen is another Notice to Appear some three-five days later, and then eventually a third Notice. By that time, of course, I would be long gone.

Returned to my apartment to finish packing for my afternoon flight. At 10:45 am (!) , another knock on the door. This time Policia Nacional w / an Arrest Warrant, and accompanied by the other party (chica). On the way to Sosua's city hall, PN stops in a quiet side street and suggests that the girl and I settle things amenably here and there, thus negating the need to stand in front of the judge. I offered RDP 5k, she wanted 30k, and eventually we settled for 10k (plus an extra 1k for my newly found PN friends.) Total damage 11, 000 pesos.

Of course, there are a lot more details to the story and as to how the transaction unfolded. But importantly, I wasn't willing to argue in front of a judge over a difference of 5, 000 pesos, and miss my flight. And maybe also find out that she wasn't really 18, as she had claimed.

All in all, it was handled professionally by all parties involved. And I see it no different than a traffic ticket in the US; one handles the situation like an adult and plays along, and everything works out fine for all involved. Or one can insist on being 100% in the right, and the situation can escalate and get very ugly (and expensive) in a hurry.

More generally your comments are way off target.

Yes, the chicas are afraid of the police, but that makes it all the more likely that this sort of scam will happen. You can bet your life that the chica saw very little of the US$3500. The bulk would have gone to the lawyer and one or more cops and other officials. But even if she only got US$500 that would still be a good payday for her (19500 pesos). She didn't just go looking for a cop and a lawyer. She would have already known reliably bent ones and they may have pulled similar stunts before. After this success they and other "teams" will be keen to try their luck, so watch out.

Tourists may be precious to the DR but the lowlife on the streets of Sosua don't take that attitude. We are just targets and marks to them. And local Dominicans not benefitting from the sex-trade despise us and want us out of the town. The tiny contribution that the gringo sex trade makes to the DR's overall economy is not worth the way it smears the country's reputation, especially now that the US and many international organisations are controlled by, or in terror of, puritanical religious loonies.

Cops will not fuck with respectable tourists in the AIs or going around in organized tours but they have no hesitation in doing so with loners off the tourist beat or the despised mongers of Sosua. The PN in the DR are now totally out of control and there is no effective chain of authority or discipline so the street cops think they can get away with anything, especially if they are desperate for money or on drugs.[/QUOTE]

How do you go from telling a puta "no thanks" to the broad showing up at your apartment door with a policeman? At least tell us what the hoe was claiming you did to her or what the policeman was charging you with!

What the fuck is going on down there (in Sosua) these days? Photos of the skanks that are pulling this shit would be helpful as well. Y'all dudes (especially all the newbies showing up here asking/begging/pleading for info and not contributing a fucking thing back to the forum post-trip) need to stop withholding info and help us put these bytches on blast.

Any chica not willing to let you snap a photo of her fully clothed, kick the hoe out and assume the broad was just going to try and set you up. If this is the shit they are colluding with one another behind the scenes with, then fuck them: let their assess starve.

Likening your experience to getting a traffic ticket in the USA is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read on these boards. You could have easily ended up like the European guy in Revere's report.

One more report of someone being set up like this and I'm limiting my travels to my namesake in Colombia, fuck it.

However there are a number of more secluded beaches before you get to Rio San Juan which you would need a car for. But these are places to go with a friend and a couple of chicas, not by yourself.

More likely they got the 10K and she got the 1K.

If you were not sure that the chica was over-18 you were putting yourself in extreme danger. I am guessing she was because, if not, they could have taken your for a lot more than 11, 000 pesos.

I don't see anything professional about this. You behaved recklessly and got scammed as a result. I agree that you made the best of a bad job, but you were lucky as well.

As you say, there is more to this story.

One other general point. You say "She knew that I was departing the next day". Mongers should never tell chicas when they are leaving because most of these scams succeed when the monger has a flight to catch. There are other reasons why it is not a good idea to tell.

Like others said below, likening this to a traffic ticket were you "grease" the cop is absurd. You're lucky you weren't thrown in jail a very very long time. I would never go back to the DR if I were you for you might be in their computer systems and the whole thing could happen to you all over again with other people wanting to extort.

Go back to the monger drawing board and start from scratch. The basic do's and do not's. Could save your life amd / or jail time!

#1 for the chicas, so they don't know your exact schedule, if I sessioned with one and she wants to do it again, or tell her NO babe ill see you around and we'll do it again for I'm here till Wednesday, even though I'm leaving Monday. Safety, security reasons, no set ups! And then I just leave ducking down in the taxi! LOL.

#2 for store vendors! Damn they get pesky, some of them are so pushy and its hard for them to hear NO. So now when I hit the beach I just tell them "ill get you before I leave for the airport, I'm here til Wednesday" this seems to appease them for the time being. But reallly I'm leaving Tuesday. Not having to deal with them again.

Never let them know when you are leaving. That's when the money trail runs out, and they have to drain every last peso out of you before you leave, or make arrangements (western union) to get the one's you left at home.

I find it odd that a puta can approach the police, make claims of a monger owing her alleged money and the police showing up with a warrant for arrest. If this is really the case, then maybe things are getting bad in Sosua. I realize that DR is corrupt, but if mongers are getting targeted, maybe it might be worth limiting ones ventures to places like Passions and BB. There might be risk involved in these places as well, but the likelihood is probably much lower. But I still find it hard to believe that is these scams are happening now, why didn't they happen before in greater frequency. Afterall mongering is not a new thing in the DR by far and neither is the corruption.

Man, first of all THANKYOU! Fellow mongers, for these 'heads up'horror stories. These warnings should more than open our eyes, that NO MATTER, how prepared we think we are, anything can happen to anyone of us at any giving time, alot of mongers, are leaving out that THEY ARE NOT CHECKING CEDULAS, Not talking to chicas as well as they can. I understand after all of that, we still could get shook down, extorted or black mailed.

These chicas are slowly discovering 'W. M. D' Weapons of Mongering Destruction, What I mean by that, they are looking for All SITUATION of taking advantage of unprepared mongers, looking for ways to commit distortiion and blackmail, as a way to get out of an agreed upon, price. And to get more out a particular mongers. The New Sosua' will force us to check all cedulas, and take a minute and get a second opinion of her particular cedula with a security guard or someone else you can trust. Hopefully that person is fluent in spanish and trustworthy, I know it sounds like paranoia, but I rather look stupid with paranoia, then like that European guy, that had that pathetic look of utter despair.

What works for me, is I too just give the agreed on price, coupled that with a familiar trustworthy chica, ie. A chicas friend et, etc. My spanish is limited, but I try to get a feel for the chica, I'm fortunate to know a few people down there. I have them talk to her in spanish, and get a second opiniion (, if theres a second person around) I also show them her I, the, and get a second opinion. I realize I can't do this everytime, and after all that still get SCAMMED!

I guess I'm a paranoid person, but I usually take my chicas from Classicos, and rarely from the strip'I am going to now maybe, start hitting up LaPassions chica, to further protect my self. I hope these methods, plus being able to think with the BIG HEAD, and not the LITTLE HEAD, hopefully will minimize, my chances of being scammed, but nothing short of not going to Sosua is a HUNDRED PERCENT.
