I have done some first steps on the on line 'market' but so far I haven't been really successful. But I can blame that on myself because I'm just too damn lazy I guess. It really takes a lot of time to go through all the responses and to chat with the girls.
I made up a catchy and humorous phrase for the 'what's up?' line in my WeChat profile, added 2 recent pics (and not even really good ones) and I was blown away by the number of responses I got. Something like 20 to 25 responses in 48 hours! Including some responses from professional massage girls (I was staying near Burgos) and even a few gays by the way.
So I can give this tip to anyone who wants to try it out: don't reply right away to all the responses you get. I suggest to wait at least 24 hours and then select the most promising ones.

After quite a lot of chatting with several candidates I could finally make an appointment with a cute 19 yo to have a coffee at a Starbucks nearby. She came with a 28 yo friend (only average looking) and it soon became clear why. This 19 yo was dramatically shy. She has hardly uttered a word, her friend did almost all the talking. Now I don't mind so much if a girl is shy but she was extremely shy and beside that she seemed to live in a different universe. With some girls (most of the time they are below 20) I just can't seem to connect because our worlds are too different. So I didn't invite her to my room which was a damn pity because she was really cute.

Another promising candidate was a good looking 21 yo student who was eager to come to my hotel to give me 'massage'. However she was busy with school and a part time job and said she would come back to me to make an appointment. By the time she came back to me it was already 11 PM and I just had a session with a lovely massage girl so I declined. And the next day I was heading for Angeles so she's still on my to do list.

It sounds to me like he arrived at Terminal Three, and somebody directed him to the white ticket taxis. Relative to the fares they have quoted me for getting to Makati or Ermita, I would have expected the fare to Airport Hotel (right in front of Terminal One) at perhaps 500 pesos. How it got to 1300 pesos sounds like, as be Max suggests, that others took a cut, assuming RB was a newb with potential for exploitation. Bottom line, RB paid about 700-800 more than he should have. So he got gouged for about 16 USD. And Filipino leaders wonder why their country can't realize its potential as a tourist destination.

You would be surprised at how many would just jump at the chance to make some cash, even though they are shy on other levels. You have been here a long time, when was the last time you saw the Philipiino leaders do anything besides pad their own accounts with government money.

From the Barangay Captains and up, the "face" they present to their constituents is primarily on how many posters / jeepney stands / trike stands and small trucks they can plaster their names on.

The Philippines Tourism Campaign "More Fun in the Philippines would seem to be a good one but I am also here. . . . I am not sure where they actually market outside of the Philippines. I know there are plenty of the Malayasian tourism ads on TV here.

I do like to tell the girls that since they are part of the Filipino population here. . . . that it is their responsibility to make sure I (as a tourist) am having fun. It is their job.

The rest of the time, just realize that the entire culture is busy trying to separate us from our money. I am pretty sure they do it with their own as well. . . Since other that family (sometimes) it is all "ME FIRST".

I wanted to get to Mall of Asia which I knew was well under P200 for a meter taxi (the return ride was P120 - not sure if taxis have an airport toll fee? ) Anyway, 10 pm after 21 hours of driving to the airport and flying with no sleep, headed for the taxi queue, too long, accosted by several uniformed men with clipboards, offered P900 for MoA, laughed and walked away, eventually found one that took P700. I knew it was still way too much but what else am I to do (go upstairs, doh! ) Got a chit with P700 plus P50 tip written on it. Halfway enroute the driver asks how much I paid, he shakes his head, and also says the tip doesn't go to him. It goes to the touts. Could've been lying, who knows. They prey on weary travellers and some of us weary travellers give them that satisfaction.

Changing the subject, after my last experience arriving with Philippine Airlines from abroad, taking 2. 5 hours to get through immigration and customs, it was extremely pleasant to arrive on Delta, have zero wait for immigration (literally walked up to a booth with nobody waiting), collect bags, and on the street 15 minutes later.

The reputation is well-deserved. As I think I've mentioned in prior posts, recently I've begun using Uber as a means of circumventing the usual taxi mess. I activate the app as I'm getting off the plane, and usually by the time I've arrived outside, my car and driver are within five minutes or so of wherever I happen to be standing. Two weeks ago (the last time I used the service) the cost of the ride from Terminal 3 to the Fairmont in Makati was significantly less than Php200. For those who don't like using Uber, I suggest the white coupon taxis which charge a flat, fixed rated of Php330 from Terminal 1 or 2 to most areas of Makati.

A. She was terribly shy. There was hardly any conversation possible.
B. She seemed to be living in a parallel universe, which made it even more difficult to converse.
C. She never had a boy friend. Nevertheless she was not a virgin anymore so she probably had one or more one night stands.
D. She didn't seem to like me very much, which probably has to do with B.

So a sexual dynamo? Maybe because you never know but not very likely (not with me anyway). And usually I cannot get it up for a star fish and even if I get it up I do not really enjoy it.
I thought about inviting them both for a second but then I would probably have shagged the older and less attractive one the most with the pretty one only watching, while paying double.

I found the most annoying to be the Philippine Airlines terminal (I forget which number) where you go through two X-rays, buy some drink airside, and then have to discard said drink because you're the opposite side of a bloody tensabarrier because you're not allowed drinks through the 3rd security barrier. What is the point of the 2nd security then? And maybe I'm ashamed or maybe I'm not but it was so easily defeated that the "security" was ridiculous. But I have been in worse airports, at least in terms of basic functionality. Rio de Janeiro, for example, was barren and soulless. Istanbul was unorganised chaos with no lines but crowds elbowing their way everywhere. Even Narita this time wasn't that interesting. Just a couple of tiny cafes and some expensive duty frees.

Anyway, yes I could have been a lot more pro-active in getting a cheaper ride and will plan much better next time. I must admit, this is the 2nd time arriving in the Philippines on my own, so my Filipino wife usually handles the negotiations while I wait out of sight. I *think* my previous arrival was a hotel shuttle so I didn't have these hassles. This time was to a private condo so no hotel shuttle available.

Worse airports? Rio is fine in my estimation, try Djibouti (climbing over the carousel to grab my bags before someone stole them), Saudi Arabia (3-4 hrs waiting line while the officers make / answer personal calls, get tea, wander off for a chat with a mate. Am sure we all have our 'favourites".

As for taxis, GE is right. But watch out for the scams at T3 with the privateers some of whom use the white taxi (440 pesos to Burgos fixed rate). Just say when asked if I like to "avail" - "yes is 440 correct" then they turn away and point to the taxi stand.

Thus, only one plane can take off or land at a time. Plus, the ground equipment that at modern airports permits several take offs or landings per runway per hour is old and outmoded at NAIA, so such efficiencies are not possible. As I recall, the critical ground equipment was declared obsolete about ten years ago and was scheduled for replacement. Unsurprisingly, it's never been replaced.

What's needed obviously is a new airport in a new location, and San Miguel has proposed to build one and in fact submitted a proposal to do so more than a year ago. I doubt that anything will come of it. Compounding the problem of the air transport system is the state of provincial airports. In Mindanao, for example, I'm told that there are no civilian airports with radar, with the radar coverage provided out of Cebu or Manila. Some have contended that the dearth or radars leaves holes in the coverage, but such details fall well outside my ken. I do know that there was a long op ed piece in the Inquirer a couple of weeks ago lamenting that fact that neighboring Indonesia is spending hundreds of millions of dollars modernizing more than 40 of its airports to become more competitive, while the Government of the Philippines does little or nothing to improve its air transport system.

Runway choice and direction (pilots call it the 'Active') is chosen based on wind / weather conditions, and it remains in place for all aircraft to use until another runway / direction is chosen (based on wind direction / weather). At most airports, even small airports, you will see a windsock. That thing determines wind direction and speed (if any), and reports it to a system called ATIS. Aircraft tune a radio to the ATIS frequency for each airport and listen to a pre-recorded message that sounds a bit like: "Modesto traffic. Runway three-zero (compass heading 300 degrees, and the name of the runway) active. Winds from one-two-zero (compass heading) at 5 (mph). Blah blah". The system updates itself several times an hour if wind direction or speed changes the windsock. Only one runway at a time can be active (if multiple runways cross). If they don't cross (parallel), multiple runways can be utilized at the same time.

Thanks GoodEnough, I understand what you mean. WestCoast1, two runways crossing each other can be used together though obviously not at exactly the same time. La Guardia in New York is probably the most well known for that. I don't know enough about their ops. Maybe they use one for landings, the other for take-offs. Let's say one plane comes in to land on one runway, another plane can be getting lined up on the other. As soon as the landing one is clear of the intersection, the one taking off can start its roll. But it has a very short window presumably, because the next landing is already lined up a few miles out.

The crossing runway 13/31 is much shorter at 1759 meters and is not capable of handling any wide body traffic and would be considered relatively short even for B737's and A320's. There is only a non-precision approach to runway 13 nothing for 31.

The runways can be used simultaneously because they don't actually intersect, except for the departure path off of runway 13. The paved portion that does intersect is not considered part of the actual runway, it would be considered a stop way if taking off on runway 13. There are restrictions on the use of runway 31 for takeoff by narrow body jets so the best case scenario is for runway 6 and runway 13 to be in use at the same time. That would allow the most traffic volume.

I'm sure the air traffic control authority has specific rules for how they operate different runway configurations at NAIA.

Even Clark (Angeles City) only uses one runway. The old parallel runway is out of service, most likely due to disrepair.

It would be nice for them to build a modern airport, but doubtful that is going to happen anytime soon. The best bet would be to repair the other runway at Clark, or build a better parallel (the current one is actually too close for simultaneous instrument approaches) and then build a high speed train into central Manila from there. A nice new midfield terminal for passengers would make it up to standard with the modern world.
