We all have a different threshold when it comes to risk and feeling comfortable / uncomfortable. Just because YOU don't feel safe doesn't mean other mongers will share your discomfort.

IMHO the only way to go about exploring a new destination is on foot and using public transportation. If you have to depend on a cabbie to cart you around you might as well go somewhere like Costa rica.

We read the forum but there is always a chance for a different point of view from another monger. You gather ALL the intel from *different perspectives then make your decision.

But at the turn of a corner in Managua, you can be facing a group of angry boys ready to take what you have. It happened to me across from the Holiday Inn one evening and I had to fight 3 guys by myself. Unless you know where you are going, listen to suggestions by people who know.

I hear you. I end up liking "walking" in other countries because arguing with cab drivers to take you where you actually want to go vs where they want to take you is sometimes a hassle, and I also tend to monger often. So across the street joints usually get quite a bit of my business by sheer proximity. BUT, why risk safety (other then the adrenaline rush)? Private taxis appear to be affordable. The shuttle idea is brilliant.

This discussion is so informative it's awesome. Can't wait to post a trip report.

The only things across the street from the Holiday Inn are a security systems / electronics store and a church. Must be a rougher crowd at that church than I ever realized!

I hope these stories are exaggerations, it'd be cool to get a REAL picture / description on if you have to be "gangbanger tough" as a monger in order to survive a month of mongering in mga! I can pull it off, but may not necessarily want to spend my energy this month fighting off chicos and ladrones every day.

I'm a creature of habit, do you think if I hit Fenix every afternoon, I get "marked" for inveitable violence / robbery? Or is it necessary to hit a different club / casa every day in order to stay safe?

Also what to expect price wise? I of course don't want to leave the house with exactly more than I need for a chica+cab fare if I'm to expect a 90% chance of being robbed of it.

But until you know Managua and know some people there, don't walk around. You will have a great time and the people are about 90% good and will love you. Might be the safer / cheaper option than staying in los robles & taxi'ing to el fenix cada dia.

i have had many great times, and totally safe sex and safe all over times, at this club over the last 5-6 years, every-time i am in managua.

yes there are cheaper girls on the streets and in the seedy clubs, but you take yer life and your penis in your decisive hands when you go to them!

I haven't stayed in Ticantepe, but have in Masaya, Granada, Catarina, etc. If you speak spanish and look halfway decent, you don't even have to go to clubs. My spanish is poor, but I get #s everywhere I go there."Hola bonita, Quy es tu numbre, mi numbre is _, blah blah blah". Even had the 19yr pizza girl from parke, hanging around outside my hotel at 10:00 at night in Masaya one time.
