Perhaps try an actual full bank branch. They tend to be more professional and less fussy than exchange booths (after all the 1996 bill is legal currency, if they can verify validity).

I'm afraid Sir Lancelot has raised the bar too high for my trip report, so I'll just add a few anecdotes:

I arrived a bit weary early Monday evening, but managed to quench my appetite with a quick visit to Soi 6. Went for a stroll along Beach Road and met a cute young thing opposite the police station. She said she usually hung out there. It was a bit too soon for a second round so I passed, but remembered her smiling face.

Next evening I met another cute girl in Soi 6 and I promised I would return and either buy her a drink or take her short time. Went off for a few beers and some food, and found myself strolling past the police station again, when I bumped into the girl from last night. We got chatting and I ended up happily buying her and her friend a drink from the local 7-11. I decided that she would be my friend for the night, or at least some of it. I then explained that I had promised this other girl a drink, but I would be back in 20 minutes, if she would like to go with me. At which point she got really angry, and told me I was just going for ST with the Soi 6 girl. I wish. There was nothing I could do with all my charm to calm her down, so I ended up walking off, and returning to Soi 6 girl (who was indeed very good).

So the BR girl missed the chance for a customer, because...? I don't get it. What did she have to lose by being slightly more gracious about the situation? There's Thai girls for you.

She was her friendly self again, and we agreed to go for a beer, conveniently near my hotel. She came back to my room, we didn't discuss money, had a nice time and she promptly snuggled down into bed, wrapping herself around me as I drifted off. She was still there in the morning, so we repeated. She offered to stay for the day but I politely declined as I had some things to do. I had in mind to tease her a little over money, so having mentally decided 1500. 2000 baht would be OK, I asked her how much she wanted. At first it was 'up to you' so I offered 100 baht with a laugh, and she then said 1500 baht. She deserved a tip so I gave her 1600 baht.

Edit: in the last hour I have received 2 very sweet, not pushy, texts from her. A real gem.

In 4 days I've had about 8 different girls. The two I picked up from Beach Road have been the most friendly, least hardened and provided the best GFEs. Probably my fault for spending a lot of time in Soi 6 where the girls are fun and the sex can be great, but a cuddle afterwards isn't usually high on the agenda.

Whereas 300 + 700 baht used to be the norm for Soi 6, I'm now mostly paying 300 + 1000 baht. On a couple of a occasions the girl was expecting 700 baht but I didn't have the change and frankly it would have been too crappy to ask her or the bar for change.

Don't know why, but often the girls don't know the other girls names. One girl told me explicitly that she didn't want to get to know them because generally bar girls couldn't be trusted. A bit ironic, I thought. Otherwise perhaps Sir Lancelot got confused over the bar names?

No criticism intended, and excellent reports, but just an indication that things change in Pattaya and it's hard to pin down reality!

Smoke and Kisses doesn't have a curtain before the bar, so my guess is that in a few cases some of the details are misremembered. No problem, I'm just saying! Those are farang names used to make farangs feel comfortable. The other bar girls would know them by their Thai names.

I am still looking for a hottie I met three years ago name May. LOL

My understanding, and fellow members more culturally aware please correct, is that all Thai people get a nickname shortly after birth. That name is usually a Thai word that reflects a specific feature eg one girl was very red as a baby, so was called 'Dang', another liked orange juice and was called 'Som', another looked like a shrimp and became 'Goong'. Those are Thai words and can be misheard or misspelt in English. So one girl yesterday said her name was Roo, but spelt it as 'Runt'. I explained that 'Roont' would be a better spelling, and from yesterday that is now her name. Other girls (and boys) are given Western names because they are seen by some as being nicer / better. And of course some girls change their nicknames because they want to for business purposes. Some with regularity. But my guess is that 'Bell' is a Thai word, and perhaps Lily too.

The other girls I have met this trip all have very definite Thai names, such as Oi, Nut, Jib, Jeab, Abon, Pat, Waew, Paeng. Abon was interesting because she has the word tattooed on her arm, but swears blind that her name is Apple, pointing to the tattoo. I can see that 'Abon' and 'Apple' are not too dissimilar. So is her name the farang word Apple, or is that just what we hear? Many times I have struggled to catch a girl's name. When she spells it out I get it, but often an odd pronunciation to Western ears.

And finally I very rarely hear girls address each other by their formal Thai names. I doubt whether they have been called by that since school, unless in front of authority such as the police or courts.

That's my understanding, but please correct.

But most of the Thai people I know have no idea why they have the particular nickname that they do. I think one of the only people I knew that actually knew why she had her nickname was a girl named Cartoon (She spelled it differently though.) She said when her mother was pregnant with her she would always wander the neighborhood looking for a neighbor's house where she could watch cartoons. But yeah, hardly anybody goes by their given name and if they do then it would not be the full name, but a shortened form. For instance, Pinnapang - Pinna, Piyanuch - Nuch. And lets not forget the ever popular Pat. There are at least 10 Pats on every corner - Pathitta, Patcharee, Pattra, etc. Tell had it backwards. None of a girl's friends would know her given name because they are all known by nicknames. Maybe the girl he is talking about translated her name for him in English, and her coworkers didn't know the English word, but I guarantee you that it is the same name in Thai as Mouse pointed out some examples of.
