First of all, we now have to buy the ticket across the round and around the corner, not inside the door as before. It maybe a good idea to buy tickets in advance next time. The ticket now only includes 15kg luggage or Porter allowance and since we had dive gear, we had to pay an additional 400 peso but the funny thing is the number of control points:

1. 10 peso at the gate while in the taxi to get onto the pier.

2. Long queue to buy the ticket, lucky we arrived early.

3. Security guard to get into the building.

4. Machine luggage check.

5. Dog luggage check.

6. Weighing of the luggage and paying the mandatory 'Porter fee'

7. Ticket check and photo.

8. Check in.

9. Boarding ticket check.

You can buy fastcraft tickets at various locations around Cebu and not only at the pier. Personally I would not buy them more then a few days in advance and I would consult PAGASA to make sure the conditions will be safe to travel. A few months ago the fastcraft Weesam Express 8 left Tagbilaran heading for Cebu and ran aground near Talisay. The 200+ passengers and crew had to be rescued and the fastcraft was towed to Cebu.

Because you purchased Supercat tickets and not regular ferry tickets the luggage allowance is smaller. Faster=lighter and you paid the same as if you would have booked a flight on Cebu Pacific.

It's the Holiday period and increased security measures are in place since around Dec 20th. The main method to travel from island to island is by ferry, hence all the increased security. It doesn't sound to me like you went through any additional security because you were a foreigner and seemed pretty normal. Also armed gangs are somewhat bolder during the holiday period with more cash being spent in the malls and stores. Some of those gangs will travel to other islands to commit holdups and robberies and most will use ferries.

The use of a porter is not manditory and given the fact you had extra bags of dive gear the porter option is a good one. The price is small and as long as you didn't have anything too fragile in your bags, was worth it.

Never complain about security. We Americans learn the hard way. Total security is good for all including passengers. As you know Phi has an insurgency and they would love to kill innocent people.
