A fellow monger sent me a PM asking my opinion on how to make 3-ways more viable and fun. Maybe a couple more of you guys might find this helpful. I am certain there are gaps in my knowledge, angles I have not considered, or differing opinions on this subject, so any further insights appreciated.

Random three-ways can be one of the most disappointing P4P experiences reported and here's why I believe that is the case. Schwab doesn't charge a foreign transaction fee and they give you the day's Visa Exchange rate. They make their money by you having an investment account linked to your bank account with them. I suggest you use ATM's at banks that don't charge a fee. Davivienda and Scotiabank Colpatria are two I use. Your US bank will probably charge foreign transaction fees, so find a bank that does not. I use Charles Schwab Bank, and there are others. It is easy to set up a brokerage account at Schwab, then open a bank account tied to it. You do not have to fund the brokerage account.

Before the trip work our some ground rules. It will save some headaches.

Forget about Seeking. It's a waste of time and money for your purposes. Facebook is your best bet. Instead of finding 7 girls who will show up at 7 different times, find 1 girl with 6 friends. Unless you have a bank account with a Colombian bank, you won't be able to do any online banking in Colombia, if that's what your inquiring about. So if you were thinking that you could do any online banking between a Colombian bank and a USA bank, there are a few options. I know that Wells Fargo has a relationship with Bancolombia, but to do anything online with them you need to have a Bancolombia account, and Bancolombia has lots of fees and a terrible exchange rate.

However ATM cards will work just like in the USA if that is where your from, with associated fees varying from bank to bank in Colombia.

My advice to you is too bring not one, but two ATM cards to Colombia, as some times there may be issues with one of your cards, typically security issues requiring verification of transactions.

Also, it's best to have International service on your phone so that when there is an issue with a card you can receive text messages. This happens to be a problem that guy's have when they come to Colombia without the capability to receive text messages.

As far as which Colombian banks to utilize for ATM transactions, that has been discussed on this Forum many many times, with Scotia bank being my go to bank versus all the others.
