Also, what is the downside of registering your phone? I am coming for 2 weeks. I want to have data all the time. I would want to register my phone and get a SIM (either in the airport or in the mall). Is this a bad idea?

Smartfren is a company that circumvents the need for IMEI registration.

I've been using a Smartfren SIM in my unregistered overseas bought modern phone for the past 2 years without issue.

I bought my SIM from a counter in ITC Kuningan (Level 3 or 4, wherever the all the phone counters are), but they're available all over the place.

As mentioned, get the staff to install it for you.

Hi Menteng. Thanks for your commments. But whys do you say can't use INdo SIM card in mobile phone abroad? I have been doing that last 4-5 times to Jakarta. It always works. I go to Telkosel at Mal Ambassador and they give me cheap card and register my IMEI.

But are you sayings if you spend MORE than 90 days in Indonesia (total, including in and out) then it doesn't work, must register?

Did you use a Indo SIM card? Or you using home country SIM with Roaming.

I went to Jakarta this October 2023 for 3 weeks. In Jakarta airport. On arrival. My phone app based customs declaration card specifically said NO IMEI REGISTRATION FOR 30 DAY stays.

So unless it just changed. The VOA less than 30 day Visa arrivals don't need the IMEI registration.

You can easily get a very cheap SIM card at the airport with unlimited data allowance. I find this is always the best solution when staying for a few weeks and avoids a lot of trouble. It is important to get the people who sell you the SIM card to install it to, and to test it before you leave. It takes them 5 min, whereas for you it might be very tricky. Also make sure to get one with fast internet speed and where the speed doesn't decline after a certain amount of time. I have a phone with two SIM card slots so I can keep my SIM card from my home country running for incoming calls and texts, and route everything else through the local SIM card.

Registering a foreign phone is cumbersome and takes time. SIM cards for foreigners are not easily available apart from at the airport.

However, for MiChat, only a proper local phone and SIM card will work. I have the impression that MiChat is useful for mongering in places like Yogyakarta. It has a function that enables you to see other people with MiChat nearby - including service providers. But I don't have the impression that MiChat is very useful in Jakarta.

I am lucky that I still have an Indonesian SIM card and mobile phone, dating from before those measures. I left those at a friend and left some money to top up the card every now and then to keep it "alive". So, when I'm in Indonesia I use those to tetter(?) with my foreign mobile phone.

Since you are a frequent visitor, I think you know somebody that can help you to purchase a cheap second hand mobile phone and a local SIM card on her / his name. And do as I do.

Alternatively, just buy a cheap Chinese phone in Indonesia. People get a brand new phone with brand new battery and dual simcard slots for less than IDR2m.

For second-hand there are a lot of them available for less than IDR1m.

Getting Indonesian phone no need to register, no need to top up (unless you need it), no need to worry about expiry date of the IMEI registration.

Don't always trust the street stuff as most are fake and some have been known to contain toxic fillers and made guys very sick often requiring hospitalization. The local Indo drug stores should be fine with real stuff but unsure if doctor RX needed or if they can sell you without it.

It's weird, but the older we get, the more picky and blase we become. This is counter-intuitive, I mean the older and saggier we become we should be ever more grateful for any morsel that lands near our plate. Maybe we're just spoiled by Jakarta, I don't know.

I find I can't even be bothered with a re-match now, no matter how hot the girl may be. I met this 25 yo a few weeks back, absolutely gorgeous, lovely smile, great personality, knew how to crack a joke and more importantly when to laugh at my jokes. I RTFF. Thanks yall for the information. I've been all over the dodgy places in Indo, ex military yada yada yada, used to speak fluent Bahasa 30+ years ago. Anyway I have never stepped foot on Java so am looking forward to it. I know many Aussies, fellow Norwegians and Swedes who live here so it should be a fun trip. I love Indonesian food and have cooked it since I was 14 or so.

Any help and suggestions are welcome and welcome. I have planned my first trip to Jakarta early 2024. I am an expert in South East Asia, I have traveled to Vietnam (Saigon), many times to Thai (Bangkok) and many times to Phils (Angeles City), but Indonesia is completely new to me. My budget for 2 weeks of holiday will be around 150/170 euros per day (flight and hotel already paid for), I hope it is enough for a "full immersion" in Jakarta xxx.

I remember years and years ago I was in Medan and my memory of it was that there weren't many attractive chicks. But decades on, I've banged some indo chicks, mainly in kaual lumpur, and in the days before they cleaned up Geylang, a lot of the indo street walkers were hot. I too wish to visit Jakarta one day to partake in all this. I've read so many reports, on places like maliaboro and what not. And with the exchange rate, sounds pretty cheap too. But alas, I need pharma aid to get it up. And keep it up. I wonder if that stuff is as accessible in Indoesia as it is in Thailand.
