This is not so much stupid shit -- but funny or cute shit in the Philippines. I thought others might enjoy the story. A few years back I had taken a woman named Rhea out of LA Caf two or three times. There is a similar agency in the Phils: Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). You can open a complaint there, but it will do you little good. The DTI stopped dealing with consumer complaints during covid. They developed a separate system of non-binding arbitration. It will work like this: 1) You must go to a DTI office and fill out a complaint. A nice employee will seem sympathetic to your cause. 2) They will inform you that you will receive an email soon regarding setting up a Zoom-type vid call (MS Meeting, or MS Teams app, I think) between a mediator, yourself, and a company representative. 3) Weeks later you will have your vid call with the mediator and company rep. The mediator will explain to all parties that you can not record the meeting, and you can not have an attorney present. The mediator will explain that after mediation, your case can not be filed in Court. Each side must accept these rules to continue the arbitration. Each side will explain its actions regarding the issue to the mediator. 4) At the end of the mediation session, the arbitrator will say that he will send a written ruling at a later date. He will also remind both parties that his ruling is non-binding (meaning neither side must accept his recommendations). 5) A week later, you will receive the arbitrator's decisions / recommendations.

Sometimes rooms can be much cheaper that way, but generally if you go through a hotel booking site you have more protection in this case.

If you did reserve and pay via a hotel booking site, the cancellation policy is usually clearly stated and can be resolved.

Flights are the opposite. Organising changes, credits or cancellations through a travel agency is a total PITA. For these, I only deal direct with the airlines. This was an interesting experience. I was chatting with someone in pinalove as a prep to my trip. She stayed around Quaipo area. To make it simpler, I decided to book a room in Bayleaf which is bang in the heart the old town manila. After I booked, I repented the cost since it was very high. I found a City Garden Suites which was a bit cheaper and felt, I can take that. Decided to cancel my reservation. After a few days did not get the refun on my card and casually checked on when would the refund be issued. I was told that they would maintain credit and I coudl use them whenever I stayed. I said I may not come that side please issue me a refund. They wanted my bankaccount details, which I did not want to share. They said they would issue me a check which I can encash.
