I'm curious to know have you ever used any of the hawkers that post outside on El Conde trying to solicit potential American tourists for massages? I get a bad vibe from all of those people I'm going to tell you this it's a barbershop that looks highly professional with a bunch of black guys there I got a haircut and shave their strangely enough I was told initially the price was 5200 pesos and then it changed to free! And this happened on my last visit but I'm glad you have different experience on El Conde. From what I seen and my experience people will try to use the many police’s in that area to intimidate you into paying ridiculous prices and it was clearly explained to me by the locals

I have mostly stayed in the Zona Colonial in the 15+ years I have been visiting the Dominican Republic. It is super convenient for food (I especially like to eat at the Plaza de Espana), groceries, bars (both coffee bars and the ones that predominantly serve alcohol) and even has a few sex shops if you need to pick up some lube or decent condoms. It is almost always bustling with activity, something I like. The Conde especially is very safe due to the police presence (POLITUR), and with all the reforms to the roads and sidewalks that have happened in the last 5 years or so, the Zona Colonial has regained a lot of charm. I noticed last weekend that it is incredibly crowded with families on Saturday and Sunday night- this is a big change from the last decade. Sadly, the full service massage places that used to have beautiful women have not returned, but this is by design. The Politur have pushed them out.

Yes, there are pimps and skanks and beggars, but these people are easy to ignore. I am not certain what scams you have seen in the Zona Colonial. I have been robbed in the Dominican Republic, but this was when I stupidly trusted a "non pro" in an airbnb I had rented near the Mirador Park (I left a large amount of cash lying out in the open and she grabbed it and ran). Without going into details, my problem with the Zona Colonial is that the hotels are increasingly difficult with people who are into the hobby so I seek an airbnb that is super guest friendly. Of course, that means I have to be more careful about girls who lie about their age and with girls who have intentions other than to engage in "naughty fun", but that is the trade off.

Don't get me wrong Zona Colonial is kinda pricey for the locals but due to the amount of shady characters flooding that area looking for a dishonest come up. I'm pretty sure there's better areas to stay in.

Most of the Airbnbs I have stayed in were self check in. The security in most were not worried about guest I bought in. Read the info on the place you book. It should not be hard to find good places at great prices.

Never has it been a place for decent hoes. I have stayed there several times. It has great food, music and an exercise room. American Airlines stewardesses and pilots stay there.
