And, of course, one needed to be on alert for the scam drivers who might conveniently "forget" to turn on the meter when leaving the airport.

Now, I've been in BKK for 10 days and have yet been able to grab a taxi ride for the metered price. All rides have been by quote / negotiation. For years, a ride from Soi 3/ Suk to Soi 23/ Cowboy was about 42 baht. Last week was 150 baht. 200 baht for Soi 19/ Suk to Nana Plaza.

Look. I get it. The price for gasoline and everything else has gone up. But not enough to justify the gouging taxi drivers are getting away with. And it isn't just me that is ranting about this. Local Thais I know are bitching about it too.

At least one could say that you can get screwed by a taxi driver cheaper than by a Thermae damsel.

Thanks for the update Sam. The taxi drivers used their meters on my last trip about six months ago. I'm guessing the taxi drivers are as upset about the traffic as they are gas costs. The gridlock is ridiculous.
