The difference between Israel making war on Gaza and Russia making war on Ukraine is, that Israels war on Gaza would not be possible without vast support from the USA.

It was a colossal failure no doubt. It actually failed fairly quickly at the start because the real goal of this incursion was to capture the Kursk nuclear power plant, which they failed to do so. After that, it was a suicidal mission to stay there, they diverted resources from the Donbas where the Russians made big gains in the last 6 months. All for political consumption for Zelensky to show the west that the Ukrainians still have some fight left in them so the money and arms keep flowing. The failure in Kursk compares to another huge failure which was the 'counter offensive' in 2023 which also failed miserably.
