Posts: 197I just went to Southeast pharmacy on Sukhumvit road near soi 15 and asked for HIV prep. They didn't seem to get it and offered me an HIV self test. Then I showed them in thai what HIV prep means on my phone and they said "no have". So need to have another plan to get prep here?

Healthlab Clinic (Soi 47 Hua Hin) - Putting this out there just in case someone is in the Hua Hin area and needs to do a quick STI test. I did a selected panel (HIV, Chlamydia, Hep, Syph) for me and my lady friend during my last visit. Cost was around 5. 5 K baht total for both of us. All results came back same day. We actually waited and received our HIV results within 45 minutes - 1 HR.
The place was super clean. Staff were professional and friendly. If you give them you WA #, they will also send results via text. A+ service!

Posts: 1217I assume this is a continuation of your query about PrEP. As another poster has noted, the probability that you will have an issue with customs is quite minimal. However, if this is a concern, when you go to get your HIV test ask the doctor to write a prescription. Another poster had a similar concern because he was going to Myanmar after Thailand and wanted peace of mind because of the higher probability of getting checked. If you are going to MedEx, then ping them by LINE that you want HIV Test as well as a written prescription for PrEP from their doctor. All done in one. Good luck, AR.

Posts: 5457In that world where you are asked about medications in some SE Asian country (except maybe Singapore), you are dead already.

Posts: 197What if you next travel to another Asian country and are asked about the medication at the customs. Then you don't have a prescription. A problem?

Posts: 175Personally I just stay healthy walking daily 10 k and avoid these pills you talk about as they cause more harm and side affects but each to their own choice!. I more concerned it can impact your quality of sex. ID rather roll the dice as the odds are in my favour whilst having fun doing BB.

Posts: 1217So you say. I also consulted a doctor when I first got on PrEP, but I wouldn't say that makes me an expert. As I suggested in my post, the OP should consult with the doctor when he gets his test done. I didn't trust my health to any ISG randos and neither should he. At the clinic he can get "good advice" from a health professional. Nobody on this site will take accountability for anybody's health, but some of us do our best to help. AR.

Posts: 185You need to have the medicine in your body for a few days before it does anything. Most will say one week, my own PCP said 10 days.

Getting PreP and starting it when you have boots on the ground is good advice if one can't start the drug prior to their trip, or if they are going to be spending more than a few weeks, but telling someone to pop the pill and you're immediately immune to HIV is just bad advice.

Posts: 1217Suggested "quick route" if you are in BKK Sukhimvit area. Go to MedEx on Soi 13 (https://medex.co.th/service/std-tests/) and get their THB1,799 blood test which includes HIV and 3 other STDs. To get results quickest, add-on their VIP Express service which will get you the result in 4-6 hours. You can contact Medex staff online to ask about the full price for everything and even schedule an appointment. Then go around the corner and get PrEP at SouthEast Pharmacy for THB980 for a 30-pill bottle (sold OTC, no questions asked). As soon as you get your (hopefully negative) HIV result by email, you can start your PrEP and be protected by following evening. If you have any questions or doubts about this, MedEx will typically allow a quick consult with the on-site doctor. No need to buy the PrEP at Medex as it is much more expensive than SouthEast Pharmacy. Good luck, AR.

Posts: 197How much would it be in total to go to a clinic in Bangkok or Pattaya for a 30 day HIV prep pills? I guess HIV test is the first they do. And then you have to wait for 7 days to it start working. So it means since I'm traveling for 3 weeks it would be effective the last 2 weeks? Do you need to continue using it after the risk is gone and possible exposure is over?

Posts: 2202DoxyPrEP is something to consider
I do this while in Thailand to reduce chances of getting a bacterial STD. It's far from perfect, but testing to date make it seem a lot better than nothing.
