On the weekend, visit the Chatuchuk market. Absolutely MASSIVE. BTS or MRT gets you there. On the MRT, don't use the Chatuchak PARK station, exit at the Kamphaeng Phet Station. Its exit is in the market itself, near a good section (section 26 - antiques (I feel at home there)). Have been buying some unique souvenirs from Little Wings House, Section 25, for DECADES; MUST visit for me. Near there, for some refreshments and people watching, La Rumba Cafe, section 26. Try the nam-a-now soda (lime squash with soda water. Very refreshing in the heat). Took over the space, enlarging it, after the previous bar closed post covid. Again, must stop. Yea, there are other, "better" markets, but Chatuchak is an institution.

I had open heart surgery there 18? Years ago. Emergency: after the stress test and Angiogram the Dr says: "Mr Don you have 85% blockage left main coronary artery. You get on airplane, maybe you die. " Great experience with the care & am still alive. I'm thinking of getting my knees replaced. Any thoughts?

No recent experience with Bumrungrad Hospital; did have a prostate biopsy about the same time as you. Last visited a year ago, but only to buy some &Ampersand ice cream in the lobby (they'd closed their shop up in Thong Lor). Definitely looking more modern and OVERRUN with foreigners at the entrance, lobby. No doubt THE foreign hub for medicine.

These days, I use Bangkok Hospital, near Suk Soi 55 across the canal. Bit less crowded, easier to get to. Have received great service just walking in when there was "problems", nothing major (walking pneumonia) and a bizarre episode with my eyes (fireworks. Seems when you get old, the ole eyeball "oil" shrinks, causing flashes). They checked my retinas, no problem, suggesting I see a specialist when I got home. One difference I did notice between Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospital, when the doctor sent me to x-ray at Bangkok for the lungs, I was left to find it myself (with directions) rather than having my hand held by staff to lead me there.

Only posted to say there are other options for quality medical service.

Appreciate the advice. I'll be looking for many day trips and things to do during the day. I'll mainly keep the mongering for the evenings there. Curious how you all do it for dinner though? Is it normal to eat alone? Any good places to handle that solitude?

I understand that we all have our mannerisms and preferences, but your questions have me thinking, where you're from is it abnormal to eat by yourself?

Check out any Foodland's restaurant, Took Lae Dee. Tables and lunch counter. The one on Suk Soi 5 has quite the character at the lunch counter, any time of day. They make a great nam-a-now soda. Food, both European and Thai, decent (and some boo birds continue). Nobody will look twice at you anywhere if you're eating alone. Take the opportunity to people watch. Do miss the ole Soi 7 Bier Garden; RIP.

Experience the salt-tapping (Korean thing) body wash and massage at Sakura Akasuri & Massage, Sukhumvit 55, between soi's 4 and 6 (Thonglor BTS station) on an afternoon. Afterwards, you will NEVER feel cleaner. Then stumble on down to Foodland, block or two away, walking away from Suk, for a drink or snack.

Have forgotten the name of the 'burb down by the river, the old docks with old warehouses, now a bit of art district with some nice wall murals.

Ride the BTS, look out the windows. Some interesting architecture around. If you see an interesting area, stop at the next station, and wear out some boot leather.

Take a nap during the HEAT of the day, you might need it.

No disrespect to anyone else, but hanging around other mongers too long gives you a skewed perspective.

I was walking back up soi 22, and decided to stop by BIT style. 10-15 years ago it used to be a slightly upscale Japanese inspired (I think also japanese owned) BJ bar, but the last 3-4 years it's gone so downhill that I rarely bother going inside, even though I frequently walk past it when I visit Bangkok.

I walked past it today also, but changed my mind and decided to walk back, pop in and look, before probably exiting within 10 seconds. I now think I also saw some reports here last year that they were now insisting on covered BJ or something ridiculous like that, but forgot about that while walking.

Outside there were two females sitting. One a girl in her early twenties I guess, the other one a woman around 30, who also looked decent enough, though not as good as the younger girl. They showed me the menu, which now spelled out BJ was without condom. I guess the enforced condom usage was not a success. Who could have guessed that.

Choose the younger girl, paid 1400, and up to the room we went. For some reason, no sink to wash your dick in here, which I could not remember from before. I'd say prime time is 9:00 pm To Midnight. FWIW Soi Cowboy these days is, in my view, a tourist trap. Full of civilian gawkers. Riddled with multiple ripoff bars run by "The Arab. " Basically coasting on a rep that dates back to the Vietnam War. If you simply must go, walk up and down a couple of times. Then buy a drink at Baccara or Crazy House (which is actually on Soi 23) and call it good.

As for attire, just about anything goes, including a baseball cap. It goes without saying that being freshly shaved and showered is a must. I carry breath mints and/or gum -- which I use frequently and give away to the girls. Finally, I'm a big fan of good cologne, and I'm surprised by how often the girls compliment me on it.

Some good points there. I have taken notes from previous posters on which "Arab Bars" to avoid on Soi Cowboy. So I have already acquainted myself with the scams that go on over there like bill padding etc. Some of those bars on my list to avoid are Nice Girls, Deja Vu, Midnite and Venus. Hell, I was sitting street-side with a beer one night and some moron on a bike came roaring down the street and mowed down a whole bunch of people. Whether it was deliberate or an accident I could not tell. Whats crazy is that after a few screams the street just snapped back to normal within a few minutes like nothing happened. No police, no ambulance nothing. People just got back up and kept on doing whatever. If I go to Cowboy it's in and out. No hanging about. Cowboy needs a checkpoint at both ends. Don't get me started on Pattaya. Odds are you will see one or two people on crutches and you can be sure that they didn't arrive to Pattaya that way. My head is constantly on a swivel while in Pattaya and thats not my idea of relaxing.

Yes, it's normal to eat alone. Except maybe at high-end restaurants. But in the Sukhumvit area there are mostly budget and medium range restaurants, where you will see many mongers and also Thai people eating alone.
