I spent a month in Indonesia earlier this year and what an intriguing discovery it was. I've been sitting on this review for a few months and it's time to get it out. I have a ton of notes. This first post will be logistics and general impressions. Then a second post to chronicle all the venues I visited and ladies I met.

TRAVEL. It was my first time to SEA. Getting to Indonesia is a doozy. By far the longest trip I've had, 24 hours terminal to terminal with two flights 13 h /9 h and a 2 h layover. There are no direct flights from the US. Between the travel time and the serious jetlag, this trip reinforced my long held belief that it doesn't make sense to go to SEA for just a week vacation.

COST. Indonesia is inexpensive. Wow. With the IDR vs. Dollar near 18000, a lot of basic stuff is often 50% cheaper than western countries. I did some price checks for fun. I will use 17000 as a conservative exchange rate. A Wendy's Dave Single combo was 96000/$5. 64; a Starbucks refresher was 55000/$3. 24; an iced coffee was 36000/$2. 11; movie tickets were 25000-45000/$1. 50-2. 50; a pedicure was 203000/$11.94. These would all be double or more in the US. Everyday items like food, transit, laundry, etc. Were generally much cheaper. Hotels too. Other consumer goods were not though (eg, runners).

ACCOMODATIONS. The affordability of the hotels was a huge factor and a pleasant surprise. Often when you travel to less expensive destinations, the big hotel chains still get you with their inflated USD rates. Not in Indonesia. I stayed in six different hotels, and never paid more than $100/ night. The low was $34/ night, the high $97/ night, and the average $58/ night. All 4 and 5 star hotels. I can't overstate the convenience and peace of mind of staying in quality hotels on this trip, at rates which felt like saving money compared to other trips. The massage services in the hotels were an added bonus. I will list the hotels in their separate thread, but you should be able to connect the dots with my next post.

ENTERTAINMENT. I'll have all the details of the venues and ladies in my next post. But the selection was vast and generally inexpensive. Not being overly into Asian women helped, otherwise my head would have been spinning. Generally I find them more pretty than sexy. What I would call a true Asian hottie is rare, though I did see a few. While most of the girls were slim and small chested, fortunately there were also plenty of options for bustier girls, sometimes enhanced but usually natural. It was fun hunting.

FOOD. I didn't sample a ton of local food. Just a bit. Had Nasi Goreng many times, great stuff. The vendors on the street were as low as 15000 which is less than a buck. Most expensive was 50000. Soto Ayam was good. Ayam Pete Kecap was OK. Most meals were in the hotel, in malls, or on the street. I didn't see a lot of restaurants outside the malls, so only sampled a few of them.

CLIMATE. It didn't rain too much. But the heat and humidity were rough. Most days it was like a sauna walking outside. I often went through two sets of clothes each day, showering and changing around dinner time to be fresh and ready for the evening. This necessitated a weekly laundry run. I found a drop off place that charged in the range 50000-70000 per load which is just $3-4. Some places will do pickup / delivery too. When heading out for a day I would typically plan to ensure at some point I was near a mall or other place where I could get food / drink and cool off. Starbucks was an almost daily stop.

LOCAL TRANSPORT. I used Grab and it mostly worked well. Loved the motorbike option, used it many times. Occasionally, a Grab was not available in a timely manner so I took a Bluebird on the street. It was sometimes cheaper too. In one more extreme example, Grab was 50000 and a 10 minute wait; I just took a Bluebird on the street and it was 12000. One thing that happens sometimes is that Grab takes a route that gets you to the side of the street of your location, as it should. But this can add a lot of distance, doing a loop to get you on the correct side. With Bluebird you just tell the driver your destination or intersection, and they will go straight there and if needed you just walk across the street when you get there. When there is no Bluebird nearby though, you are stuck with the ride app and the wait time can be ridiculous at certain times of day. Grab will sometimes also string you along for half an hour claiming the wait is just ten minutes. I also took a Bajaj a few times, they can be good for going short distances fast, but they will jack up the price with a bule tax. You can negotiate. The buses and metro are the cheapest and good for longer distance if a station is near, but even so the difference vs. Grab will only be a few bucks. With all options being fairly cheap, convenience is really a deciding factor.

MONEY. Possibly my biggest mistake was not bringing enough cash. I only brought about $700 USD. I learned the ATMs don't have high limits. So I ended up going to an ATM 3-4 X a week. It was a PITA. Fortunately I had a no-fee debit card. Some shopping mall ATMs only dispense 500 K. After some trial and error I mostly used locations with Sinarmas ATMs, which had a 3 M limit. BNI was good too. Next time I will bring more cash. Crisp, clean $100 US bills get the best exchange rate. The largest bill is 100000 IDR which is unfortunate, your wallet or money belt will be bulging if bringing several million IDR for an evening out.

GENERAL. In advance I had done a ton of research, here and on SMF. And it seems a lot of people don't think much of the city of Jakarta. I see their point, but, I am in the glass half full camp on this one. We make of each destination what we choose to think and plan and do, and there is a lot to work with in Jakarta. The pollution didn't bother me. The heat and humidity did, but you adjust. I did many long walks in different parts of the city. The Metro red line was convenient to get to various areas as a starting point. Or ride app. I probably walked 20 miles in the city. Checked out several of the malls and tourist points. Sarinah was one of the better areas I found to hang out. Kept up my exercise with running and swimming. Got plenty of massages. I also took a 5-day side trip to Yogya, more on that later.

Sidebar: From the reports it was clear that some form of PEP / PREP might be appropriate for this trip. I never did this before, but the reports convinced me. I had zero interest in BBFS on this trip, but BBBJ's are important. I decided on 100 MG doxycycline every other day. Not the most rigorous regimen, but it fit my comfort level and all turned out well.

Once you get there, you will see they are all so close together that you can walk past all the venues in 3-4 minutes if you don't enter any of them. It's a small rectangular area.

Hey OS, I totally agree with most of what you are saying. Let's say two people meet in some venue, they get along, establish a good vibe and establish some level of feeling between themselves, if so, they can then reach a mutually agreeable understanding and everybody is happy. That is the only way to go IMHO. It is called p4 p, but it is not slavery.
