As we walked into the hotel, the guys near the lobby gave us thumbs-up and smiled, as if congratulating me on closing the deal.

The whole experience was amusing. I had never encountered so many freelancers on the street at other places besides Lokasari Plaza, alley near New Medika bar in Grogol, BATS and CJ bars during a single trip. Just keep your eyes and ears open, and you will find the freelancers even at unusual places.

I stayed at Sudirman Hill Residence, an apartment I booked on Agoda, couldn't tell any difference from Airbnb. It had a washer and dryer, kitchen, refrigerator and shares swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, gym with another adjacent hotel property, Somerset hotel. There is no free breakfast but plenty of restaurants and minimarkets, Alfamart, Indomaret, Family Mart nearby.

It's a great combination. I usually plan to fly into Jakarta inbound and return from Manila or Bangkok, although sometimes I fly inbound as well as outbound from Jakarta (two trips).

I spent a week in Jakarta in September and another week in October. This was my first time using MiChat in Jakarta. I had never been able to install MiChat on my US phone during my previous trips, even though there seem to be workarounds online that I couldn't figure out. However, there was one major catch, almost every girl / woman who showed up looked different from the profile photo. This happened despite my explicitly stating that I would cancel and send her back if she didn't resemble her pictures.

One girl explained that she had no idea which photo had been used because she wasn't the person who had been messaging me. Apparently, an admin had handled the conversation. That's when I began to understand how this worked. It seemed they operate as a group involving an agent, an admin who managed the messages, and a driver who transports these girls between hotels. Overall, it was a mixed bag of experiences.

My takeaway is MiChat can be convenient if you are looking for morning availability or lazy to leave your hotel room, willing to lower your expectations and accept that the profile photos are not real, and be prepared for a very mixed experience. The biggest advantage of MiChat is Timing and Availability. Unlike most regular bars, which don't open until around 2 PM, MiChat gives you options in the morning, with girls willing to come directly to your hotel even at 10 am without any issues from the hotel staff.

And then of course, the rats the size of daschunds under the footpath. The walk isn't quite as romantic as a stroll along the Seine.

Jakarta is not a pedestrian friendly city. DaVinci is more likely to suffer from a broken ankle than a stickup robbery.

During the day the heat and traffic pollution just adds to the fun.

Can he walk around Jakarta? Sure. Will he want to when he arrives? Likely not.

There is a reason that even the poorest or the poor don't walk.

I can only go to these places at lunchtime or afternoon, so I generally prefer spas, as they open late morning.

Also someone selling themselves 5+ times a day for 375 k raises red flags for me, although I have been to Classic two times (afternoon), and once was very good, once was very bad.

This is one of the biggest drawbacks of Jakarta and one of the reasons I spend much more time in Pattaya, Bangkok and Angeles City than in Indonesia. I find it very difficult to find any decent afternoon option in Jakarta.

There are probably many places for afternoon fun, the first coming in mind are the spa with their fishball girls.

Lately I checked the club in Kelapa gading named "Utara", but I went there at night around 10 pm. Lineup was poor, 5 fatties and 1 slender girl, but the woman at the desk said it opens at 1 pm until 1 am, so obviously it's a place for the afternoon mostly. She said prices were something around 500 K and 700 K for 1 hour. I'm not interested in afternoon fun so won't check it up again. When you're in Jakarta, it's like there's no safer place in the world (except for the road traffic, but you'll never be physically threatened). I used to come back late at night walking for a much longer stretch than the one you're planning (past midnight), and never ever felt unsecure.
