OK, so that was kind of embarrassing...

Phone call from agency to say girls were outside, but when I got there, there was only one girl. She was OK, but was a little on the young side for my tastes, and was dressed in a sari. But everyone else at my hotel is wearing very Western clothes, so when I tried to take her inside the hotel staff immediately pounced and she was led away kicking and screaming. Only my second proper report in the Mumbai thread, and unusually I am starting it in advance...

Mumbai: Three Mira Road based bars were raided late on Saturday and 75 people were rounded up.

Officials said the bars—Swagat Myna and Millennium—are located at a stone’s throw away from the Mira Road police station. At Swagat, the cops found a secret chamber where bar girls had been hidden. The girls could barely breathe in the chamber, which was extremely narrow.

"Forty bar girls were rescued in the raids. They will be sent to a shelter for women. Thirty-five persons were arrested, including customers, bar staffers and managers. They have been booked under the PITA (Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act), ’’ a police official said.

The raid was conducted by a special squad formed by SDPO Maithili Jha (Mira-Bhayander police).

Jha has also penned a stern letter to the Mira-Bhayander municipal commissioner, asking for details of the construction of the secret chamber and how the owner was given the go-ahead for it.

According to the officials, the bars have been raided in the past, too.
