You can always claim your innocence in these situation and mostly they can come to a better deal with the owner than customer, you just have to be confident because you don't have any connection or intention in that for say you haven't rented the place so max it will be some harassment and warning which can be negotiated wisely with some cost but always depends on the situation and way you talk, we do have grey area and law but its better to cut the deal before it reaches that far.
