Once the full impact of the sanctions sinks in, the Russians will find their lives turn topsy-turvy, the new reality hitting them hard like a knockout punch.

With the double whamy of galloping inflation and shrinking outpout, life in Russia would have come full circle, sliding back sharply 30 years into the abyss.

It is then that the present day reality would mirror the privation of the 1990's.

And the Russians would do something similar to what they did 30 years ago.

They had come to Delhi in droves to buy wollens and leather jackets, which were hugely expensive and in short supply in their country then, but found easy money in selling sex in the process.

We can expect to see that classic economic exchange of goods and services again in the very near future.

In the 1990's, the Russians were all over the city, in every shape and size, in every age and state of bloom.

The markets of Connaught Place, Palika Bazar, Karol Bagh, Paharganj, Sarojni Nagar and Yashwant Place (Chanakyapuri) were the hub of Russian activity, and the hotels around them their favourite haunts.

By daytime, one could find them making purchases as well as seeking "friends", euphemism for sex.

When night came, they would be outside their hotels, waiting to be picked up by anyone willing to pay, even a scooterwala (three-wheeler driver).

Outside Kanishka Hotel, the earlier avtaar of Sangri La hotel nearJanpath, Connaught Place, Russians lined the pavement after 8. 00 pm, negotiating with customers, including scooterwalas.

You could just pinch their bottoms or squeeze their tits, and they would just laugh it off. These were no ordinary Russians or CIS women, by the way They were real classy Russians staying in five star Kanishka hotel.

In daytime they would be in the pool of the hotel or lying on the lawn next to it, relaxing topless, and one could watch them in full view enjoying the sun and swim, from a soft drink kiosk located close by just outside the walls of the Kanishka hotel.

The kiosk is still there, perhaps waiting for history to repeat itself.

Kanishka hotel had then come into the limelight after a Russian woman was found drowned naked inside its pool. She was earlier seen along with a Russian guy, making a blue film near the pool.
