Grab cars usually costed between 11 k and 16 k rupiah depending on where I was going.

Don't you normally stay at the Red Top Hotel? Going from the Red Top Hotel near Emporivm to the Mangga Dua mall area won't cost much anyway and likely won't be a traffic issue. I think you might even be able to take a bajaj. It's safe taking grab cars for such a short distance. However, I stay much further away. I hate using grab cars to come from my place to that area because the grab car drivers want to use a GPS and the GPS never gives them the most clever route so we are almost always stuck in ridiculous traffic. They don't want to change their route even when they are stuck in traffic because their fare was based on that route. Sure, the price of the ride is cheaper, but my time is worth more than a few dollars to me so I don't prefer to sit in traffic for hours.

I exclusively used Grab on this recent trip. 2 times I did not I used Bluebird and Siiverbird. The Silverbird was from the airport since I did not feel like waiting in queue for 67 Bluebird taxis. It was a fiasco to say the least and I may or may not post the incident one day. Had to use Bluebird once since there were just no Grab cars available.

When I arrived last time, it was raining, crowded, and there were no cars at all. So I took the train for 70 k and there was almost nobody on it. Not bad at all. I had to take a taxi from the train station when the train arrived at it's destination, but it wasn't far for me from there. In the end, it took me an hour to get home. Had I taken a taxi, it would have been longer due to that rain.

Finally, there is Grab, which works exactly like Uber. Grab bought out Uber's operations in all of SEA a few months back and in turn, Uber has taken a financial stake in Grab. Grab is a Singaporean venture.

Grab car. I ONLY used the 5 star rated drivers in Grab cars (not Grab taxis). The price difference is nominal and all but one driver was in a newer if not new vehicle, usually a small SUV or crossover. The only one driver not in a new vehicle was in a really old junkie car that was super dirty. I almost asked him how he got to be 5 stars when I got in the car but luckily I didn't since he turned out to be a super nice guy. After the long ride to Pluit I knew why everyone rated him 5 stars. All drivers were friendly and made sure you got good service and they dropped you off exactly where you wanted to keep their 5 star rating. 5 star Grab cars usually costed between 11 k and 16 k rupiah depending on where I was going. What I really liked was if I wanted to go to Kota Indah I no longer had to explain to the driver where Kota Indah / Pangjay were since my Grab destination was on their GPS. I also liked the efficient cashless transaction through my credit card. I did tip some drivers if their drive was through traffic or they got me somewhere really quickly.

Pro tip. If you change your destination part way through a ride it will end up costing you a lot more even if the new destination is closer. Also, if you do a geo location for a driver to pick you up it may be more expensive that if you punch in a store name for a driver to pick you up from. From Kota Indah I walked to the auto dealership on Pangeran Jayakarta.

I also used Grab in Kuala Lumpur and they were good as well.

Sadly, I am back in Pattaya now where Grab has decided to be greedy SOB's and match the taxi pricing of the taxi mafia.

Thank you. Sometimes I do public transportation when it's justified. Taxi is only $3. 45. Taking public transportation to go out and f--k has always felt too depressing for me. It's like commuting for a job. Also most taxi drivers I met were super nice guys and it's door to door with aircon and pleasant music all for 50 K.
