I suspect there may be more to this situation that you may not be telling us? But if that really was the case, I would have called their bluff and walked into the police car and request to call your embassy. Generally street police are not so audacious as to make up fake charges completely out of thin air. They usually only try squeeze you of of a minor infraction or technicality, like the need to carry official ID / Passport.

In the few times I've been pulled over by Indonesia's finest, I was waved through when I wasn't at fault (speeding taxis, taxis following ministerial vehicles etc.) or paid fines of 50 to 100 k when I was in the wrong (no ID handed over, car full of hussies at 4 am etc.) I would have expected to pay this amount in MM's case. Perhaps add a bit given that the Games are in town and the cops were obviously out to make some money that night.

The things MM did right were never ever hand over your passport and always settle the issue there and then. Obviously them having important possessions in their hands dramatically weakens your position. Similarly, standing your ground to the point of being taken to the Station and dealing with Superiors who work in much larger sums will see you paying much more and at risk of lock up or assault.

The whole speaking Bahasa thing can go both ways. I've learnt and got a way with a lot when people have spoken in front of me not realising I understand them or just by acting dumb and not saying a word. On the flip side, showing you have been in country a while and know the system can lower costs and speed the process.

Obviously having money out and visible is just asking for trouble and never invite anyone to search your goods with out cause. Planting drugs etc is rare but not unheard off. Again, it's much better just to pay there and then just to settle things and be on your way. Its not worth arguing over whether you should have paid 50 or 500 k ($5 or $50).

I agree with this statement, and I think your Bahasa needs to be at a certain level before it can help you in this situation. I don't think there is a 'standard' rate people typically pay when pulled over. Its all relative and depends on many factors, such as the person involved, seriousness of the situation, the time of year (holidays, events etc.) and even location. However, if you did nothing wrong and have all your documents in order, you shouldn't worry too much or have to pay much if anything. All that will happen is you will lose some time and be inconvenienced a bit. The officers usually only push for the 'tip' if you don't have proper document, passport, or did something wrong.

I speak fluent Bahasa and had to pay between 100 k-200 k depending on the 'offence' found when pulled over. The time I paid 200 k was when I didn't have my updated car registration. The more serious the offence is, the more serious the 'tip' it will cost. Road checks and pull overs are most common around the Red Light areas, but even happen in central / South Area sometimes. If you are a foreigner you'll most likely need to pay more than what I've paid.

I know a group of foreign businessmen that got pulled over in a Silverbird exiting Mulia hotel. The guys without their passports each had to fork out 1 Juta each, while one of them had an ASEAN card and he got off. I wasn't in that situation, so I'm not sure if it could have been negotiated lower, but I think the fact it was a Silverbird with foreigners and coming out of Mulia, contributed to the higher asking price. At the end of the day, its in the hands of the Officer because he does have the authority to bring you into the Office to process the offence (and if this happens you may spend hours or even up to a day sorting it out), but usually they don't want to spend too much time with one single car and rather quickly move on the the next car / victim, unless you've totally pissed them off or refuse to give some face. Its always a negotiation and you just need experience or the skills to come out of it successfully.

I really don't know how much they are wanting these days. I don't go to the brothel areas at night and that's where you are likely to get pulled over by the cops or have the cops raid the bar. (I do not ever drive a car in Jakarta, so when I am pulled over, it is the taxi being pulled over in a police road block) The last time I was pulled over by the police and actually had to give a bribe was about 10 years ago and I gave 100 k. I've been pulled over a few times after that but I didn't pay anything even though I never carry my passport. I just acted like I didn't understand what they were talking about and spoke only English to them. Luckily those times they had only Indonesian speaking police in the raid and they got frustrated. If they have an English speaker, the likelihood of a bribe goes up. I would never speak Bahasa to them regardless, but Goferring makes good points.

I didn't really show any fear because I didn't have a working girl with me nor did I have anything illegal on me, but I did try to say "tiga ratus ribu" he kind of just ignored me and said "lima. Five" kind of a lose lose situation I was going through a series of bad luck at the time.

I got caught up in the philippines airport bullshit but after 5 days of bullshit I arrive in "wonderful" Jakarta. So I get in line for a bluebird and they have this ticket system that is 100% broken theres this guy in control of the taxis. And he is calling numbers in the range of 35-55 the ticket that I just got printed was ninety fucking three so an hour later I kind of pleaded with this guy to let me get in a taxi. So we get near the Mangga Dua mall and it is about 2 am at night and we get pulled over by indonesian police at a check point they set up. They asked for identification I had my taxi money out the first thing he asked was "Is that for me? I of course didn't reply and put it away I don't know about your guys's countries but bribing an officer in it self is a crime. So he says "are you in a hurry?" I say no you can check the bags and I have USB charging cables and he seems to be enamored with the cables. So he looks in my carry on finds nothing and now he want to inspect my main bag. So he checks my pockets and I'm on my way to the hotel so I had changed some money. He found the stack of cash and said "for me?" again. I then brought out 200,000 and held it up. To which is he said "500,000 for me and my friend introduction money. " after which he repeated "introduction money" I didn't reply with any objections, I fail to see how I could have been set up by the taxi driver because it was literally the best route to get to the hotel via google maps. The "officer" has a few words with the taxi driver and we were off. But how common is this bullshit my other 2 trips were incident free. I want to preface this with I assume this officer had a very deep drug problem as his eyes were bloodshot and he was extremely jittery, which also put me off in terms of reasoning with him. The police officer also said that they are out there because of the asia games.

I get to the hotel and it seems like delivery girls are always the ugliest of the bunch. You have to goto these shit holes and pick them yourself if you want to find a good looking girl. The ones that usually show up when they call it "delivery" if you have ever seen the movie spaceballs. The girls that show up are the spaceball stunt doubles of actual girls.
