Surprises can be found in the strangest of places. Over 150 moons ago, I walked from the bus station in That Phanom down to the river and entered a little shop to buy a drink or something when one of the women present showed me a small room to the side. When I was there I found one or two small houses with very old and unattractive women for the 500 or less price range, and halfway decent 20-25 year olds at various little 'massage' places in the area around the Mukdahan Needle, but they wanted at least a thousand baht on top of the massage fee for sex, so it amounted to close to 1, 500 baht by the time you were finished. Not your thing I think. Someone told me there was also a Soapy there, but I didn't check it out and given the size of the town I'd be surprised. I think you will also often be offered girls by bellmen in some hotels, around 1, 000 baht up.

A Thai friend always claimed that someone he knew had found small high value Lao-staffed houses, a la Udon, either in town or near, but I never felt sure of this claim and could find nothing asking motorbike and tuk tuk drivers when I visited. I wish you'd go and thoroughly check it out.

If you were going as far as Mukdahan why not check out Ubon Ratchthani instead (another place I never could find much fun) , or Khon Kaen, which I can report is very good.

Just thought I'd update on these places. Over the last month or so I've been to all again. At Kosa had a 25ish nice looking girl with breast implants for 2, 200. It was most definitely not worth it. Not sure why, but this higher end place seems to have all girls a couple of years older than the 'best' girls at the cheaper places. I guess they are pretty by Thai standards (very white) and a bit 'elegant' looking, but there's really no substitute for 19-21 when you're paying through the nose.

The Adunyadet red district is becoming less and less interesting IMHO, especially for the occasional visitor. Anyway, if one wants to visit this area, I think that around 9 or 10pm is probably the best time nowadays.

The brothels of Soi Fai Deng are not only cheaper, they also are open earlier. A couple of them are even open quite early in the morning (I sometimes visit them at 8am for instance), and by 4 or 5pm, most (if not all) of them should be open then (though the best time to go there is also a bit later in the evening, at approximately 9pm, I would say).

In these 300-baht brothels, the service provided is very often as mediocre as the girl is cute. But it's (IMHO) not as difficult than in the past to find a (relatively) decent provider there, and when it is the case, you just have to offer a reasonable incentive to get a BBBJ or anal, for instance. I never give, as a tip or incentive, more than 200 baht for a BBBJ or 300 baht for anal, and I always find providers who do oblige for those amounts.

RCA Knight is exactly right. Decent service is as rare as hen's teeth in Udon or Isaan in general, and actual good service is, well, I've almost never found it. Do these places have showers?

Those that I frequent have all at least some kind of collective rudimentary bathroom: there is a big container for the (cold) water and patrons and providers bathe by throwing water on their body with a plastic bowl or a bucket. But sometimes, the girls have their own individual shower in their room (without or with hot water provided by a small electric water heater in this case). By the way, it's not always the cheapest places that are the less comfortable. Usually, it's about 30-45 minutes, but it's often possible to stay more once you are a regular customer and known by the mamasan or papasan of the house. In most brothels that I know of, you can also pay more for a longer session (two shots or 60-90 minutes approximately): the longer session costs 500 baht in most of the establishments where the regular session is charged 300 baht.
