I have not encountered the negative aspects when outside the Zona Colonial or tourist areas. I should clarify this and say the Dominicans are no worse than other groups, including North Americans who usurp the term American. That is another story. Good and not so good people exist everywhere. Also, when shopping, I have had several cashiers return money to me because I misunderstood the amount and paid too much. Folks need to travel outside the tourist areas, meet real people, and enjoy the country.

The problem now is that you now have to begin the process for residency in your home country so if you are already living in the DR you will have to incur the cost of flying home plus paying a lawyer more than before due to the more complex application process.

Temporary residency which is good for a year, paid an honest lawyer who speaks english about $1000. Led me by the hand thru the Bureau of Migration and then to another office. The 2nd stage is a residency card and a little less money, but when I go to renew after two years next March, I will go to a Bureau of Migration office here in Santiago and the cost will be about 3000pesos, I think. Won't need a lawyer. Residency is good to have for a drivers license, health insurance, and to show Dominicans I am living here in good faith. BUT. I'll always be a gringo.

The dominicans I know and call friends are not beggars nor liars. I do not frequent the tourist areas anymore, may apt is located in a lower middle class area. Most of my neighbors are poor (but prideful) , for neighborly things like helping me with a package I do not give nor am expected to give. I do hire neighbors for odd jobs (I hate painting) and pay them accordingly.

My landlord and his family are now very close friends, I am always invited down for a drink (almost daily) , beer is flowing freely and I never have to come out of my pocket. His friends have become my friends and they are the same. They are what I would consider middle class and treat me like family. I've been living in this apartment for 1 1/2 years now and have found extremely gracious, friendly warm people. In NJ / NY, Since I was a child living with my parents have I had neighbors like this.

In the tourist areas I feel tourists get a bad image of the dominicans, this is where a lot of disposable income is entering into the DR. So we get to see the lowest of the low in terms of hustling, begging, etc. Also, if you look at the P4P sex scene (which is what we are here for) , in the USA it is much more seedy, full of scam artists.
