The hotel I'd check routine is for YOUR protection, mostly. Africans do have passports (police checks them fairly often) , so you can ask her to show that. In mid-range establishments, you can usually ask them to skip the I'd check (just tell them it's OK not to check). Or if they insist, you can use a ST hotel (which is safer anyway).
