Posts: 320Even with $6 a gallon airport and Costambar prices are too high.
If you compare those prices with Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and some others, you will see that taxi mafias at the airport and Costambar charge 3-5 times higher.

On the cab, $45 US to Puerto Plata area is standard. On a trip last year, I questioned the fares at the airport, and all the taxis pointed to the posted fares.
(In all fairness, gasoline costs $6 a gallon there). I managed to get one guy to agree to $40, but with a tip, it came to about the same.

I have been to FOD five times this year and "the place in Costambar" twice and I would hands down take the top ten girls at FOD over the top ten at BB's any day. The issue is that BB's has two shifts and FOD has five, a mistake on FOD's part in my opinion but if you are staying there then over the course of a day or two you will see some awesome talent and their performance and attitude are superior in every way to BB's, again this is just my opinion.
Pedro, the owner of FOD and his wife and daughter all act as mamasan / mamason's and will help in any way that they can. Pedro is at the facility every single solitary night until closing, in close to 40 nights there wasn't a night when he wasn't, his wife is there every day during the day. All of the bartenders are bilingual, the waiter is bilingual and Pedro is bilingual, not sure what you are looking for.
I hope I wasn't the guy who had the only girl you were interested in under wraps, if you had asked me, Pedro or one of his family members or even a bartender to ask me how long I was hanging on to her I would have cut her loose amigo, plenty of fish in the pond. Are either of these two her?

Posts: 27Field of dreams update: Do not stay there overnight!
i was just on the nort coast recently and decided to give stay at fod again for a night. i had stayed about a year ago under the current management and back in '10 under the previous owner. unfortunately, after this last trip i simply cannot recommend staying at this place even for one night! unless major improvements are made, this place is only good for the occasional daytime drive-by if you're already in the area.
just to get it out of the way, the facilities are fine; in fact i can say that the place is in as good a shape as i've ever seen it. the food is still solid as well. the problem comes to down to the talent (or lack thereof) and how the chicas are managed. of course, the only real comparable to this place is the place in costumbar (which i won't plug here). i happened to stay at the costambar spot earlier in the trip & fod is a rip-off by comparison!
first off, you'll see no more than 20 girls there on a given day, which is what i expected based on recent reports. however, the day and next morning that i was there i only saw 1 'shift' of chicas. about 12-15 of them show up between 11am and 1pm. then the rest trickle in throughout the day until around 7-8pm, when the full lineup is available. these numbers would work for 1 day if the quality was decent or if the guests are not picky. unfortunately neither was the case for me.
i was honestly shocked by how poor the talent was this trip after my previous 2 stays at fod. half of the females there had no business whatsoever working in any p4p environment, especially one catered towards foreign mongers! for example, an ugly, older lookin female showed up & i thought she was a cleaning lady. i shook my head when i saw her sit at the bar & start winking at customers! another 30% were not that bad to look at, but not my type either. the remaining chicas either had flaws that were dealbreakers for me or weren't available. this last point is the key.
what really killed my stay was that there was only 1 chick that i wanted. she was built how i like, cute & a solid 8 on my scale. the problem was she was attached to the hip of another monger! later in the day i found out that this other monger booked the girl for the entire day and was holdin on to her for his entire trip (which of course included my stay there)! this is no bueno when you consider the low quantity (17-20) and low quality.
around 8pm the last new chica showed up & she had some potential. the frame seemed to be my speed, but what she was wearin suggested that she was coverin up an unflatterin stomach. given that i was really thirsty, i went ahead & interviewed her. sadly, my suspicions proved true, be / see she showed me pics of herself & her kids showin that her mid-section was a problem. so i ended up not pulling zip from the place. and if anyone thinks i might be too picky, when i was at the costambar place a few days earlier, i always had 3+ to choose from that were exactly what i was lookin for!
the big problem with the fod talent is that there's not enough variety. the chicas were mostly either chunky or spinners, with not much in between. imo, the beauty of dominican women lies in their variety, so it's unacceptable to give overnight guests such a limited choice. tbh, it seems like the management feels that they're doing there job by getting any chicas they can find to sit at the bar!
the last point worth making is that i had no opportunity to complain once i saw how bleak the situation was. during my full day there, the local manager who speaks english was in & out in the daytime & disappeared at night. the expat management was nowhere to be found about 30 mins after i arrived. and of course fod doesn't have a 'mamasan' to oversee the girls. so most of the time the only non-puta employees around were the bartenders / wait staff. this was also the case the next morning / early afternoon, before i left.
bottom line: now i know why it's so hard to find pictures of fod chicas! as long as the talent pool is this weak, there's absolutely no reason to book a room at this place. if you stop by to check out what they've got, you might find a decent option for a st session onsite or a phone number for off-campus activities. it's a shame, because the location and facilities have a lot to offer. at the end of the day though, you just can't run a successful mongering all-inclusive with sub-par women.

Get off plane and see the same 4-5 guy band that was there 5 years ago. Also notice lots of airport improvements. Money exchange right in front of you. Just for info I check the rate and its 36. 5. Always known of Jenny's to have the best rate so I wait until I get there. Pay the $10 entrance tax, grab my luggage, go through customs, passport stamped and I'm off.
As agreed, the Blackbeards driver is waiting for me. Later I found out this would cost me $45. Posted airport rates were not as high and could probably be negotiated for less. But if you prefer the relative security from the unknown just have BB arrange for you. Stop at Jenny's, purchase a few personal items and exchange money at 42. 8. Even with the stop, airport parking spot to BB front door is 42 minutes. Easy check in and discount if you pay cash.
Food and beverage: affordable rates. 4 presidentes. 2 mixed drinks, plus food totaled less than 1060dop. I didn't even worry about the change.
Lodging: decent enough room size for my needs. Bit of an ant issue. Room has TV with English channels, air conditioning, safe, and mini bar. I enjoy BB's safety.
Talent and Jacuzzi: decent choices. 1600dop / 40usd short or 3000dop / 80usd long. Bit of a break if you pay in pesos. Wonder if that's the cost for the girls to transfer USD back into pesos.
The way the it's setup now puts me in the mind of how the playboy mansion grotto must be like. Grab your girl get naked and hop in. BBBJ from each of the two I was with. No leche. If you do you have to pay the short time rate. I remember someone here asking about Greek. I discreetly touched each on the brown eye and asked, te gusta? One said yes, the other said no. I picked one and went to the room. Total jacuzzi was maybe 15 minutes. Could be a few minutes more or less. Good way to give the girls a test drive. In the room my girl aimed to please (and she did).
It was Mardi Gras night so after the session she dressed in a cute little outfit. Downstairs I see all the other girls are also dressed. Everyone moves up to the crows nest. The girls are loose, friendly and looking to have fun. If you get the newsletter, I see them take the group photo that they always post. Guesstimate. 25 girls and 6 guys including me.

Otherwise there is not enough difference in rates between reputable places to be worth travelling from one town to another just to change money, or even travelling within a larger place like Puerto Plata. You would spend more on transport or gas, never mind the wasted holiday time.
Change a little in your home country or your hotel just to see you through your first few hours otherwise you will spend more on taxis looking for a place to change money urgently.
In Sosua Western Union is good if you are fairly nearby.
In Puerto Plata the locals use RUSA (a few minutes from the central square) as on average it remains the best but Caribe Tours and Western Union are very good if you happen to be nearer them.
If you are changing US$10, 000 and upwards in one hit it might be worth you looking for the best rate, but I sure hope your security is good to make that worthwhile doing.
Refuse to accept 2000 peso bills unless you know how to spot the [excellent] bogus notes now in circulation.
Try to avoid ATMs not outside banks. If there is a malfunction at a stand-alone ATM you may waste a lot of time trying to get it sorted. In fact, better to avoid ATMs altogether and draw cash inside the bank during opening hours. Safer, and you can ask for small bills and coins which are hard to find here.
Yes, good idea to buy a cellphone if here for more than a few days. You can get one to make and receive calls and store chicas' and friends' numbers for 500 pesos plus pay-as-you-go minutes. Give it away as a tip your last day if not coming back fairly soon.
