Epilogue - the Long Trip Home:

My taxi driver asked if I wanted to take the Skyway to Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 and I said yes. The travel time was less than 15 minutes. Natty, I'm glad you found the Fairmont acceptable. It's become my default hotel in Makati, and I no longer stay anywhere else. Raffles, for those who may be interested, is a condominium, and many of those who purchased units did so with the intention of allowing the hotel to rent them out for varying periods. I have a close friend who lives there, and have seen his condo rental, which is lovely and quite spacious.

I've found that using Uber is an excellent alternative and I rarely have any problem finding Uber cars in the vicinity of the hotel, so that the wait is usually quite short. I take an Uber car to and from my office in Ortigas most of the mornings and afternoons that I'm there.

Hi GE, it is interesting news about a French Restaurant opening in August. I am slated to return in April so I guess the restaurant will not be up and running that soon.

I am sure the Raffles Suites are very well appointed and spacious. Actually I prefer I bedroom suites over deluxe rooms. They make me feel more at home and I like to entertain my girls in the living room first before we move on to the bedroom.

In BKK there are several high quality suite hotel possibilities at very competitive rates. I like the Fraser on Soi 11, the Marriott Apartment Hotels on Soi 24 and Thonglor (Soi 55), and several Grande Center Point Hotels. I reserved a week each at the Fraser, the Marriot Thonglor, and Grande Center Point T21 for my next trip. All except the T21 were around $92/ night. But that's BKK were high supply of rooms has competitively driven down the price. In Makati, unfortunately, there are not that many quality suites hotels and as a result hotel rates in Makati are higher than comparable hotel rates in BKK. I would love to stay at Raffles, but I will not pay their rate. Skogis's favorite hotel, the Ascott, is an interesting less expensive option, but at the time I booked the Fairmont, it had a 20% higher rate so I sacrificed on space by booking the Fairmont.

I have taken note of Uber Manila. I think I will give them a try for my next airport pickup and for longer metro rides, but for a short haul to Burgos I do not think it is worth it.

I have stayed at both Fairmont and Raffles. Raffles comes with an all in suite arrangments and butler service. I have Ascott as my favorite hotel but a year or so ago no vacant room at Ascott during my period of stay so I chose Fairmont (with a few days at Raffles as well to test the ground) without any deal. For same sized apt as in Ascott (I like spacious environment) I chose a cornered suite of lovely 85 sqm at the "lovely" price of 16500 piso per night. The Raffles suites runs higher and in the area of 20 to 25000 piso per night.

Since the renovation they have upped their rates to around $140/ night and at that price point I prefer the Fairmont hands down. I did not get a special deal per se from the Fairmont, but it was on the low side of the trending offers one sees on booking sites like Agoda, Booking dot Com, and Expedia. It was $150/ night for a deluxe corner room. The corner room was the enticement. It was nice to have windows on the west and south walls and they gave the room an open airy feel.

After I returned home, Fairmont started sending me monthly emails and offers. (I had signed up and had become a member of the Fairmont Club in order to receive free internet while I was originally there.) Last month as I was in the process of booking hotels for my next Asian trip, Chase Bank offered me their Fairmont preferred Visa credit card with a signing bonus of two free nights and complimentary breakfasts for two people at any Fairmont Hotel in the world. It was an offer too good to refuse. And as a result, I have booked two free nights at the Makati Fairmont on my next stay. I will still be paying the early bird regular rates for the rest of my visit, but the card returns 5 reward points for every dollar spent at a Fairmont Hotel and 2 reward points for every Airline reservation made with the card, plus no FX transaction fees so the points will add up quickly. There is a $95 annual fee (waived the 1st year) for the card, but that is offset by a free anniversary night at any Fairmont Hotel in the world so I think it is a pretty good deal for me and for Fairmont. What they got out of it is my making the Fairmont my default Makati hotel. What I got out of it is an overall reduced rate and free room upgrades when available. It is a win win for both parties as long as I was going to book the Fairmont anyway and I can cancel the card anytime to avoid a future annual fee should I decide not to stay with Fairmont any longer.

I still wish Makati had all the accommodation choices available in Bangkok though, but as I wrote in response to Skogis's comments, I am getting more and more interested in what Makati after dark has to offer and I think I will be spending more time here in the future.
