Greyhound and other Mexican buses stop at the parking lot right behind the McDonalds. It's along the walking path to cross the border into Mexico.

At all hours late at night there are buses waiting to go North back to LA, or to go South into Tijuana downtown, the airport and the bus station.

There is a ticketing office and a little waiting room right behind the McDonalds in that parking lot.

If you're using Google translate, download the offline English and Spanish version to use with no internet. My best advice is to observe a bit before diving into the water. If you read posts from the vets, you will notice they do a walk about and observed first. Walk around, grab their assess, tip them a dollar and see how they react. On the way back, there are a few vans parked in the lot across from JIB, and drivers hanging out at the corner, soliciting riders Northbound to San Diego, Santa Ana, LA, Fresno, Stockton.

One night coming back at 2 AM, my car pool driver screwed up, I had to negotiate a ride with a van driver with his right hand amputated. The only other passenger was an old farm hand going back to work in Fresno. He dropped me off in front of my house in OC at 4 AM. I remember paying him about $30 for the ride. He continued on to Fresno, picking more passengers in LA.

These vans would drop people off at their houses. They should have no problem dropping you off at any parking lots along freeway 5.

I also once hitched a ride with a monger at the exit of the JIB parking lot, giving him $15 for gas. There are all sorts of transportation Northbound from the buses and vans across from the JIB.

I have been crossing the border at San Ysidro so often with my Global Entry card, CBP and NSA probably classify me as a border rat. Hehe.

That's a good tip for the guys who have to drive from LA, Fresno or San Jose. They could pick up the bus along the way and just snooze until it arrives in San Ysidro.

Yes DJ, those '$10 each way' vans are pretty cheap and convenient. I don't know how to make contact with them (as you would do when you coordinated with the van company to get picked up close to a freeway off-ramp). When returning home from Tijuana they have a ticket office in the same building with the McDonalds in San Ysidro. Because they just have a few stops immediately next to the freeway, they usually make the trek in less time than the trains.

I live in South Orange County, so the border is only about 90 miles from my home. I don't face as much traffic hassles as you guys from LA (or even SuperSteve from Anaheim) so I typically only need 90 to 100 minutes from the time I pull out of my garage until I'm pulling into the Leyva's parking lot. My gas guzzling Ford Taurus drinks $40 of gas for the round trip.

Rocky the Flying Squirrel had been mentioning Intercambio for quite a while. Usually when a bit tipsy. I finally relented, but then it became my job to locate suitable candidates, and to weed out the loonies, clowns, flakes, perverts and weirdos. Boy, did I get an education.

Apologize gents was not sure about LA particulars. Had to take coaster up to Oceanside from SD. Over heard a gentleman that said he was going back to LA and for him it was more cost effective than driving. Most of us know LA traffic can be a crap shoot and what gas prices being what they are might be better option. Hell just the fact you can relax on Air conditioned train with WIFI and not stress would be worth it alone. Better to be rested and fresh to expend that energy into some young hot pussy. Anyhow just trying to lend some insight to the community who may overlooked train option. Beat of luck.

Another option is that you can take Greyhound right to San Ysidro. Although the bus does have to deal with traffic, it is less expensive and it takes you right to the border. Just my 0. 02.
