I've been to Mabs now about a half a dozen times and still haven't seen a garota worth my time or money really.

Maybe I've just been unlucky, but the girls all look over-the-hill, and just at it way too long.

Now I just pop into the hortifruiti, grab one from the case, and then pray there is nobody in line. If there is a line, I end up waiting just like the vendor. Big hortifruti, 5 cashier's desks, 1 cashier working. Who has no change. People in the line are making change for each other so they attendant will actually take care of more than 1 person every 5 minutes. Ah, Brasil.

Way OT but sounds more like my experience in Zona Sul than Hortifruti. Hortifruti near me is well managed, Zona Sul is a zoo. But seriously what is the reason for the eternal shortage of change in BR cashiers?

Is it:

1. The management of the stores is at fault.

2. The banks are at fault.

I used to assume it had to be the management but then somebody told me that the banks are at fault be / see they will not provide the management with sufficient coinage. Anybody know?

No, nobody made a decent report on the coconut price recently. Propably because all the posters in this thread are sitting behind their desks back home, discussing topics not related to Rio.
Psst, I let you in the big secret. You can get the coconut cheaper if you buy one that's not chilled. It will be even cheaper if you buy one directly from the coconut-truck which pass the orla in the morning around 6 AM. You can even get the coconut for free if you climb the palm tree yourself.

I've more or less stopped buying fresh coconut water from kiosks or vendors. It's much faster and just about as fresh at the many Hortifrutis (fruit & veg grocery stores) around Copacabana.

Most make it themselves in the back, filling 500 ML and 1 L bottles directly from the green coconuts. At my local it's BRL 9. 99 for 1 L. Plus I don't have to stand and wait for the moronic vendor to fill the bottles, wait while he tries to find change, or wait while he attends a more impatient old lady who comes up while he's filling 3 bottles for me.

Study Portuguese grammar, read any Portuguese texts as much as possible. You will always catch some new words from the context, while reading, even not having a dictionary by your side. It also helps you to learn correct language.

As Fuckafmeddig said watching tv is the most important part. It's the best way to learn to understand spoken language if you don't have somebody speaking to you personally. You can also listen to music and using app like Musixmatch you get the lyrics for the songs.

Some girls I understand almost perfectly and the others not so well. I'm constantly trying to improve my Portuguese to get most out of my trips to Brazil. When you can make the girl laugh in Portuguese, you have come a long way to the right direction. As one can read between the lines in many posts, when relating with pros or non-pros the fun factor is never to be underestimated.

Thank you. I think studying is one thing, but like you said, immersion is the best. I think it's easier when you are bombarded with the language. It helps your brain pick up much faster because of the constant learning.

One-to-one lessons with fluent speaker and watching television as much as possible. Speed of talking is a shock when you land-this a teacher won't teach you so watching news, novellas etc will help.

Its still the hardest part for me to due the many accents, speeds there. Regional pronounciations vary alot. Minas, Nordeste, SP,Rio. All totally different. And in Rio you have many as well depending on social class, area etc.

I saw that firsthand walking along Avenida Atlntica in Copacabana. The guy was up the tree knocking the coconuts down onto of his sack below. Unfortunately, one hit a coconut in the bag just right and was propel out into the street. He slid down the tree like it was a fireman's pole and scurried out into the street to retrieve the errant coconut impervious to oncoming traffic. Reminded me of that squirrel chasing the nut in the movie Ice Age. Sometimes the best entertainment is free.

I've liked in Lagos, Nigeria year round so I'm quite familiar with what to expect temperature wise. Like you said, girls are hungry all year.

My biggest concern now, is how much Portuguese I will need to excel in both pro and non pro activity. I plan to be here for 8-10 weeks, but plan to study portuguese at my local university here in the USA for 4-5 months before hand. Also, there are some bi-weekly Portuguese meet up groups I plan to attend as well. Could you give me some advice as to how I should approach studying portuguese.
