I never ever ever have an ATM card with me and carry very little cash with me along with an ID in El Centro. My ATM cards stay locked up in my apartment here. Yet their are some very stupid gringos out there.

And I always, always, always carry my spare wallet (the other locked up, with a one of my ATM cards hidden NOT in the safe), a bit of extra cash, and the one ATM card I have that has only a couple of hundred dollars in that account. Best to be able to have the funds to bail yourself out of a jam. If it gets stollen (never has, in 30 years of travel to some funky places) so be it.

The answer is because it is so cheap there. You can get a room with hot and cold running water, cable TV, and Internet for as low as $ 10 US Girls can be found that will go for as low as $ 7 US a pop, and you can get a plate of food for as low as $ 1 US from the street vendors.

Then I would say "You get what you pay for".

I could save money on the $1500+ rent I am paying for my apartment in a nice part of town here in the US by moving to a ghetto-ass, crime-ridden part of town and pay $350-400 bucks a month, but the cost savings don't equate to the level of danger you'd face on a day to day basis.

You can never be too careful in this area, even if your with somebody else, and especially at night and your an obvious gringo which is the case with my buddy. It's unfortunate but I have two friends down here staying in El Centro who won't even leave their rooms at night out of fear of being robbed in El Centro after dark.

A few years ago I was in that area in broad daylite and had a somewhat similar experience. I didn't have a wallet but put the cash in my right FRONT pocket. One dude tapped me on the shoulder while the other guy reached into my LEFT front pocket. Unfortunately for him he picked the wrong pocket and got nothing but a hankerchief. They ran off and I didn't even see what they looked like. But I'm on the same page with you guys: no wallet, no valuables, no passport, and only the minimum amount of money needed.

The problem has to do with your dress style. Just having cash / ID / CC is fine if you wear tight pants. If you tuck in your shirt, you should never put anything in your back pocket. I tend to wear loose jeans. Not super baggy but loose enough to be comfortable. Whenever I sit down, especially on a sofa, everything falls out of my pockets! I also don't tuck in my shirts so it covers my pockets. I carry a chained wallet (not sticking out) and put in the minimum. Cash I will need for the day, ID, copy of passport, 1 ATM card. That I put in my front pocket, never anything in the back.

I agree 100%. It amazes me whenever I hear of a wallet, passport, watch, purse or whatever being stolen. Why even have that stuff outside of your hotel safe? If you can't afford to lose (have it stolen) don't carry it with you!
