The reason I have posted what I posted is that there are many articles on internet likely written by some tourists organizations or travel agencies depicting Colombia as now a safe place claiming that at one time it was unsafe but now it is much better even though they caution about showing off money or jewelry or expensive phones but still giving the impression that it is safe like major cities in Europe and North America. So people read these misleading articles and when they travel they feel they are as safe as home and start walking around after dark and alone and unprepared and hence fall victims. My posts are to counter those false assurances. Likely the German friend was a victim of those articles depicting Colombia now as relatively safe compare to past. Otherwise he must have been completely out of his mind otherwise to walk in red Light district in a country like Colombia at 1:15 am!

You're like a broken record, repeating the same thing over and over.

Walk around Most anywhere in Manhattan at 1 am no problem, although I'd avoid the park. Walk around Queens, Brooklyn, or Harlem at 1 am and you're probably getting robbed. Walk around the Bronx and your funeral will be shortly after someone discovers your body.

Any major city has places you shouldn't go wandering around at night. Each city also has places that are fine at night, as long as you're not stupid. In Bogota (if you're not stupid) Parque 93 and Zona Rosa are fine day or night. However, if you start wandering around the dark back streets, you may find trouble.

Bogota is dangerous if you're stupid. Just like every major city. If you pay attention to the forum, if you don't do stupid things, you can successfully navigate Bogota with no problems.

So, I am considering a visit to Bogota. Would it be a safe bet to merely take a cab to your destination in Santa Fe, and take a cab from your casa / club whatever? I'm thinking the management of most establishments can call you a cab.

Note, that I have visited Medellin without any problems, but I understand its a different ball game in Bogota. I like to try different places with every trip I take and understand Bogota has a much wider variety of mongering options than Medellin, which is saying a lot. Heck, the exchange rate is awfully good right now.

If you think walking around, alone, at 1 am in any city of more than 10 million people, is safe, you're not smart enough to be let out of the house without adult supervision. Especially in the red light district.

However, to single out Bogota, as if the same thing wouldn't have happened in almost any comparable neighborhood in any major city, is doing Bogota a disservice.

Bad things happen when you do stupid things, no matter where you are.

I can walk around at any time in any Canadian city and feel safe though you may argue that there is no city of 10 million in Canada and you are right but I have walked around in London England late at nights when I was younger (about 20 years ago) and felt safe and never mugged, robbed and assaulted. I must have done that at least 100 times and I think London has 10 million residents. New York is not as safe as London and I have never walked around in New York but I have a feeling Bogota is less safe. My point yes you are right in any city of 10 million it is not safe to walk around alone late at night but it is a lot worse in comparison in Bogota than other comparable European and North American cities of 10 million London being an example unless we compare Bogota to other dangerous South American cities then you are correct.

This is a disservice to members and tourists to say that, Yes it is less likely to be kidnapped by terrorists but violent crimes including robbery and assaults is same or worse. Statistics shows even more violent crimes in Chapinero (where zone Rosa is located) than Santa Fe (I did attach a link before in one of my posts). Avoid all areas of Bogota after dark Especially late at night. Your friend is either too courageous (a big guy who can very well defend himself like the James bonds we see in movies) or too stupid to walk around at 1:15 am in Santa Fe Colombia.

When we went home, my friend is from Germany wanted to go even look into other clubs. It was about 1:15 in the morning. I went for a taxi to the hotel. He was running around Santa Fe in one of the lower streets attacked him, smashed his head, took his phone, sneakers and money he had in himself. At night, the Santa Fee extremely dangerous, and there are policemen. Be careful and go not alone. We will not walk over there already. Zona Rosa is much safer.
