Yeah I get the same reaction from friends and family, "Colombia? Oh NO!

Getting tired of pointing out Jamaica, the Bahama and U.S. Virgin Islands all have a higher murder rate, and Medellín is now considered safer than the US cities of Baltimore, St. Louis, Detroit and New Orleans etc.

Some / most of the guys who preach the "spanish is necessary" are doing it to prevent newbies and Spanish illiterate guys from coming to Colombia. The old "I don't want new kids in my sandbox" comes to mind. I find that comical to be possessive of hookers.

I must tell 3-5 guys per day about Colombia. A lot of guys from work are planning a trip. The pastiest white guys you'll ever see, and none of them speak a word of Spanish. I will give them a map and some advice and they will have a great time. How hard is it to walk into a brothel and point to a chica. After that, it's pretty self-explanatory. If you need Spanish to fuck, you got bigger problems than language. As for indy's, you usually book them by whatsapp and that's why they invented google translate. It's enough to book a simple date. These guys are not looking to have any in-depth conversations with these chicas.

Maybe if enough English-only guys come to MDE, the chicas will realize that learning a little English may help business.

However, some people, when visiting another country, don't spend every waking hour fucking. Everything you do that isn't fucking, will be better if you speak some Spanish. This includes getting from the airport to your hotel, checking in to your hotel, ordering food and taking a taxi to whichever casa you visit. Even the fucking is sometimes improved by a few compliments or directions.

Knowing some Spanish also gives you more freedom. You can explore (in the better parts of Medellin) without worrying about getting lost. You can exchange a few words with people, something that will come in handy if you're staying at an AirBnB apartment. You might even overhear "Tan hermoso. Ojala todos LOS extranjeros sean asi. " And who knows where a few phrases in Spanish will take you?

There is no need to learn Spanish, but if you rate your trips by something other than # of fucks per dollars spent, learning some Spanish will make your trip better.
    Excellent post, thank you!

You'd think it'd be plain common sense.

Fucking is definitely better if you speak her language. How else do you tell her, 'I like this but not that. ' 'Do that a little softer / harder / slower / faster, please.' 'Can you stick your butt a little farther in the air?' 'Open your legs a little wider, please.' 'Yes, I promise not to come in your mouth but I don't always keep my promises.' And how do you ask her what she likes? Oh, that's right, I forgot; you don't care. It's been worth it to me it learn the languages where I travel most often. So I can communicate with hookers in several types of Spanish, Italian, and French, and I'm working on my Portuguese. But I'm also interested in meeting regular people, and I travel all the time. I'm sure my viewpoint would be different if I were flying someplace for a weekend that I had never been before and never planned to go back to.

My problem is, if they use a different alphabet, I'm lost. Can't learn much of anything. Also I could not learn German to save my soul, even after several weeks there. You win some, you lose some.

Those are the two I recommend. Mostly I spend about a third of the year in Spain. Only Italy has better food. The French would argue, but they would argue over a wet dream. Argentina is fairly safe (I spent about seven years there) lbut the club scene no longer exists except for a couple of very sad places. There are still plenty of internet gals and Craigslist gals. I'm sure anyone with Google translate would have no trouble getting ahold of them.

    Not.

Yea the guy that got robbed at knife point. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I agree with dickhead. Don't be a typical fucking gringo and not know basics. Don't think this is a first world country. It's a jungle. You can be the victor or the victim. Viva Colombia baby!

    Your guide friend

    Jack,

I am in Medellin now and have a few days to kill. I like your idea and would like to hire your friend as a guide and Spanish teacher. I spent 4 month learning Spanish on Duolingo. Now I can read, write basics. But can only speak a little, slowly and broken. Does she have WhatsApp?

By the way, do you have time for a drink together? I am from New York. Second time to Colombia but I have been mongering in Europe a while.

Shit, even license businesses in Medellin are sketchy. I read on this forum that some guy got drugged in one of the casas.
That's a good plan since there is no chance that they will lie and tell you a nice story. LOL.

    Language help

Just wanted to thank you guys for all your help. Especially for the Language recommendations.

I had a good time even though my Spanish was weak.

    1. I Learned the basic greetings.

    2. kept it simple and use short easy sentences.

3 a. I created a phrase book on phone and paper.

Be. Note: I would review the phrase book before specific situations.

See. I did not take out my phone out unless the other person was confused by the phrase I was using.

4 a. Always be polite almost too polite but, that is easy for a Canadian.

    B. Sometimes I was a little too formal. One time after being with a pretty lady I said "Gracias por su ayuda. "

(it was stuck in my head from when I would ask for directions instead of coming up with something more smooth.

5 a. The locals are very nice and welcoming. If I was really stuck I would politely ask if they minded writing down what they were saying or the price.

    B. Many people spoke so fast and I did not want to be rude too much with gestures or make them speak into my phone.

    6. A smile and polite gracias goes a long way. I did make people laugh at me a few times. I have a good sense of humor, I can take it.

    7. Also the hotel I was staying has a for hire pretty good English speaking taxi driver.

He worked in Canada and USA for many years in construction and as a taxi driver.

He said I could give out his number. (he lives in Bogota though).

I think his price was fair. 50000 COP airport runs and for guided tours or regular rides 25000 COP per hour.

Next trip I would come to Medellin and stay at the Mansion. I will keep improving my Spanish and venture out a little.

Mansion is expensive and want to avoid due to last year crack downs. ; If mansion is the the only option, I will skip mde all together, instead go to Tijuana Hong Kong club. I have no time to learn Spanish as researching club, hotel and casa takes lot of time. No one here specified Spanish is mandatory. BTW, is Spanish required to use uber?
For one thing people are going to say things to you and expect you to understand, and don't think everyone is going to want to hang around to type in your translator app. And even when they do don't expect what comes back to make any sense. Often it doesn't. That said yes you can get laid at the casas and clubs, but showing up in Medellin with nothing but "hola" and "gracias" is going to involve a lot of problems and frustrations. If you don 't want to learn any Spanish or stay at the Mansion then my recommendation is Gringo Gulch Costa Rica and the Sportsman's Lodge.
