Sort of, yes. But there was more to it than just that. They allowed the girls to "ficha", guys pay 35 or 40 pesos for a beer and the girl got a 20 peso kick back in the form of a small chip or "ficha" that they turned in at the end of the night for cash. Many many girls were very unhappy when that stopped, they made tons of money of of it. The vast majority of those beers bought for the fichas were not drank, eithe poured them of the floor, passed them to a friend, or in the case where fools bought them buckets of beer at ficha prices, beers were dumped directly into the bucket when customer wasn't looking. The Herradura, before it closed, was also a "ficha" bar, but girls were paid cash directly. The Intimo, still open, used a laminated paper ticket for their fichas. There are short time dive motels next to the Montera where girls could take clients if the guy didn't have his own hotel room. I cannot, comfortably, discuss the other issue. Some things are best left alone.

What really killed the Montera was the law against ficha drinks. They had between 100 and 120 girls drinking ficha beer, that is a ton of money for the bar and the girls. Stop that and it goes to hell rapidly. They had a huge overhead, ficha drinks really helped cover that. If it wasn't for the city cracking down on the fichas, Montera would have re-opened. It's done now, anyone crazy enough to re-open it with the hope it will revert to the days of old, has not done their research. There; s a lot more to the story, I cannot publicly post it.

Few and far between, is the best description I can offer, sad state of affairs, nothing compared to 8 or 10 years ago. A total waste of time.

How are Tijuana's door girls?

If you are asking about the girls hanging out at bars' doors, only the less popular bars employ them to suck in newbies: Gold Palace, Karla's place, Valentina, Coahuila ect.

They would have 2 cute young girls sitting at the doors as bait, but when you go inside they stick you with old, fat, lumpy, ugly, toothless hags, never fails hehe.

I asked an old, ugly woman in Karla how much to go arriba. She said $80 with a straight face, same price as the hottest young girls in Hong Kong. WTF? These women are not in touch with reality, and have no ideas how to compete in the market place.

I think that RedMau5 might be referring to the street girls in NL Boystown who stand in the doorways of their rented rooms waiting for customers to wander by. RedMau5, Tijuana's street girls don't use assigned rooms. There are hundreds of available short time hotel rooms in the Zona Norte and the customer usually follows the paradita to her preferred hotel. Its never too far away.

And to answer your question, the girls are AWESOME! I never saw more than 10 door girls at one time in NL Boystown. On a busy night there might be as many as 100 street girls on duty in Tijuana. And that's not counting the additional 500 or so bar girls or the growing number of escorts available online.

I always return to USA around 6 to 6:30 AM. That's when the bridge is least busy. Also, I always buy booze from the duty-free liquor store before I crossed into Mexico (bring a bag or backpack so you're not dragging shopping bags when walking to your hotel). We are allowed up to 5 bottles / liters. At that time in the morning, the TABC counter is not opened so I don't have to pay duty on the booze.

I had Global Entry every since the program was started 7-8 years ago because I travel overseas a lot (6-10 times a year. Yes, I go to the Philippines, Thailand, Europe, etc. For the hobby). The fee is $100 for 5 years, so it's only $20 a year. You have to go through background check but not with the IRS (I guess unless the IRS is investigating you). When I first applied, I did not know that I have an outstanding citation for speeding in North Carolina over 20 years ago. Apparently that little town just computerized it's records a few years back. The statute of limitations has passed and I had to pay $50 "processing fee" to remove it from my record. The point is that did not affect my application for Global Entry.

So what's the advantage for NL? Well, for one thing, it is easier to carry the card than a passport. When you are crossing back to USA, forget the long line, just walk pass them and look for the Global Entry / Sentri line which is usually empty or 2 or 3 people. You will get more "respect" from CBP officers because they know you are "clean".

I agree, I was really scared when I went to Monterrey so I had my guard up and ended up feeling really stupid. Things are not as dangerous as many people make it out to be. I think having cargo pants does help since you can use those multiple pockets for money and wallet. I would be careful when using smart phones. But many people use smart phone now days. I know that the women from Mexico are bad ass and they are not feminists like in the USA. I am excited about crossing NL. I wish I had Global Entry. I am a little scared that if I apply for Global Entry that the government will find out about the time I worked in Monterrey for a few months and didn't report that income on my taxes LOL. Other wise, I would have already applied for it. I will probably apply once I get a taste of the benefits of Global Entry after my first few trips to Nuevo Laredo. Thanks!

Bbond, Hopefully I will have a decent experience with Taxis in NL. I will more than likely arrive around noonish on a Saturday and come back Sunday morning. An airbnb host said that 6 am is the best time to come back to the USA. Hopefully the new pedestrian lanes will make things go faster.

I suggest that you PM Bbond and connect with him on WhatsApp or text. Then let him know a couple days before you arrive. On the day of your travel, let him know your ETA, then message him when you are ready to cross the bridge. He will wait for you at Emilianos and accompany you to your hotel. He is the one you must get to know in NL.

I used to take taxis to Boystown or the midtown (where shopping centers like HEB and WalMart are), never had a problem. It used to be US $10 or 100 p even when the exchange rate was 13/14 to 1. The same with the girls: $40 or 400 p. They didn't seem to understand foreign exchange then. I think they are wiser now. However, do confirm how much is the fare before you get into the cab. When I grab an unknown cab, as soon as I tell them where I am going they understand that I am local and I don't get he tourist rates. I don't know how Global Entry would help you here, unless it is accepted for Sentri entry, then you can walk to the building bypassing the regular line. 6 am is a good time for the bridge, week days and Saturday, after that it can be quite full for a few hours as people cross for school, work, or shopping. Sunday is good until 8 am or so. Afternoons vary as to wait times, evenings are also fast.

AAA rep told me they do not cover Mexico. If you are in an accident without Mexico's insurance, they will haul your ass to jail until they settle liabilities.

Driving in Mexico is a breeze, mush faster and safer than crossing border on hoofs. Crossing the busy San Ysidro border to la Zona bars and back with Global Entry average takes only 10 minutes curb to curb. Mexico's immigration never stops cars to file visas. I would never walk again.

You can buy Mexico's insurance on line from the AAA web site, costing about $100 a year liability only. I haven't had any accident but if they don't pay your liabilities you can always sue AAA because they list that link. I just sued a guy in small claims court for a fender bender and got $5100 from AAA. I could have gotten more if I had BS medical bills ect. The guy did not have a chance with his blue collar arguments in front of the judge. Damn I am good..

There is zero danger crossing the border to NL. I have been doing that for over 10 years, even in those years when it's considered "dangerous". I just made sure to cross during daylight hours including the time to walk to my hotel, Hotel Fiesta which is 5 short blocks away. I am Asian so I stick out like a sore thumb. No one tries to harass or hussle me except the salespeople of the pharmacies along the way.

If you are still apprehensive, maybe Bbond will meet you at Emilianos, the first bar on your right, only half a block after you exit the border crossing.
